Summative Assessment – I, 2011

ENGLISH COMMUNICATIVE

Class - X

SECTION A

Q1. Read the following passage carefully:

In going round the end of the hill, I saw one of the beasts sitting on a piece of rock as before, but this time he had a little bush in front. Being about 30 yards off, I took a good aim at his body through the bush, and fired both barrels into it. The men then called out, “He is shot, he is shot!” Others cried, “He has been shot by another man too; let us go to him!” I did not see anyone shoot at him, but I saw the lion‟s tail erected in anger behind the bush, and, turning to the people, said, “Stop a little, till I load again. “When in the act of ramming down the bullets I heard a shout. Starting, and looking half around, I saw the lion just in the act of springing upon me. I was upon a little height; he caught my shoulder as he sprang, and we both came to the ground below together. Growling horribly close to my ear, he shook me as a dog does a rat. It was like what patients partially under the influence of chloroform describe, who see all the operation, but feel not the knife.

Choose the best options to complete the following statements :

   (i) never been to this part of the hill before.

(ii) been to the hill earlier

(iii) to be guided by his friends.

(iv) move thirty yards back before shooting the lion

(c) Before approaching the lion, the author __________.

   (i) wished to see the other man who had shot him

(ii) wished to keep his gun ready to fire again.

(iii) wished to move behind the rocks

(iv) wished to see it from a height.

(d) It is evident that when the lion sprang upon the author it was positioned

   (i) at a distance from the latter

(ii) at the same level as the author

   (iii) lower than the author

   (iv) higher than the author

(e) The word „starting‟ in the passage means :

   (i) a sudden movement in surprise

(ii) a sudden movement in anger.

   (iii) to begin something
