SECTION A
1. Read the passage given below and complete the statements that follow :
1 We got a white-carpet welcome as our bus rolled into Manali. Stately deodar trees were covered with silvery white, their branches bent under the weight of soft hail, piling up bit by bit. I jumped out of the bus to feel the snow falling on me, for it was my first encounter with the pearly-white soft hail lightly falling on the ground, on rooftops and on trees. The houses, cars, poles and the road we were walking on were dressed up in white to celebrate winter.
2 As our group stood at a tea shop on the wayside, sipping masala chai, I looked around the snow-capped landscape, with the Beas river flowing nearby. Suddenly, I was showered with more snowflakes, which seemed to have attained a quality of ‘being’; as if each one of them had a character, a role to play — to delight, to enthrall and to create a perfect platform for fun and games. I connected with them instantly. Perhaps, my colleagues felt the same way too.
3 Thump….a ball of snow hit my back. ‘‘Bull’s eye’’, said Shalini, as she sent a white ball of snow flying in my direction. Before I could jump out of the way, I was hit on the face. I could feel the cold particles of ice kissing my cheeks. ‘‘Wait till I get you,’’ I screamed but soon got distracted by the snow-laden deodars, deep blue skies and lovely mountains — each playing its part in spreading beauty and joy.
4 After enjoying the romance of the snow, I followed our group for some sports on ice at Solang Valley, 45 minute drive from Manali. However, the next minute, there was an announcement by our tour director : ‘‘The route to Solang Valley is closed due to heavy snowfall.’’ To overcome our disappointment, we decided to explore the town on rented snow boots, so that we didn’t slip on ice.
5 The next day, we headed for the beautiful valley in four-wheel drives. The sun shone brightly atop the mountains, welcoming us for our stint with ice games. Solang is a haven for adventure sports and every time there is fresh snowfall, people throng the valley for skiing, paragliding, and zorbing.
6 The valley was abuzz with activity. When we reached there, a skiing competition was underway. I could see the skiers deftly sliding down the mountain and safely landing in the valley. ‘‘It’s a tough task; the mind has to be fully focused, for even a single slip can prove fatal,’’ said a participant as I watched, from the safety of a wood and glass cabin, as skier after skier crossed the finish line, some on twos and some on all fours.
7 The valley has one of the most beautiful ropeways, offering a lovely view of the snow-capped mountains full of deodar trees. On top is a pizza place with some mouth-watering options; having a hot melt-in-the-mouth pizza in the Himalayas was a divine experience.
