CBSE Class 10 English - Sample Paper Blueprint & Marking Schemes Review section-wise weightage, model papers, First Flight and Footprints Without Feet-based questions, and step-wise mark allocations for the 2026-27 session. 📋 CBSE Class 10 English Exam Pattern & Marks Distribution (2026-27):
• Total Marks: 100 (Theory: 80 + Internal Assessment: 20).
• Highest-Weightage Section: Literature (First Flight and Footprints Without Feet) carries 40 of the 80 theory marks — half the paper. • Section-wise Theory Split: Section A — Reading Skills, unseen discursive and case-based passages (20); Section B — Writing Skills and Grammar, formal letters, analytical paragraphs, tenses, modals, reported speech (20); Section C — Language through Literature, prose, poetry, and short/long answers from First Flight and Footprints Without Feet (40). • Evaluation Split for Descriptive Answers: Content accuracy (50%) and Expression/Fluency (50%). • Question Mix: MCQs, Short Answer, and Long Answer questions, most with internal choices. Sample 1-Mark Question (MCQ): In "A Letter to God" by G. L. Fuentes, what does Lencho's letter to God reveal about his faith?
Step-wise Marking Scheme:
• Correct Answer (1 Mark): Lencho has unshakeable, almost naive faith that God will directly provide for his material needs, without doubting that his prayer will be answered. • Reasoning: Despite the crop-destroying storm, Lencho confidently writes to God for exactly the sum of money he needs, showing complete trust rather than despair. Sample 6-Mark Question (Long Answer - First Flight): "Nelson Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom" describes freedom as a series of stages rather than a single moment. Explain this idea with reference to the text, and discuss what Mandela means by saying true freedom includes the freedom of others.
Marking Allocation:
1. Correctly explaining freedom as staged — from a boy's limited freedoms, to political freedom, to true freedom which respects others' rights (3 Marks). 2. Correctly connecting this to Mandela's idea that the oppressor is also not free, and true liberation must free both the oppressed and the oppressor (2 Marks). 3. Clarity, organisation, and use of own words rather than reproduced textbook lines (1 Mark). 📌 Evaluation Criteria followed by Board Examiners in English:
• Content and Expression Weighted Equally: Descriptive answers are marked 50% on accurate content and 50% on expression/fluency — a correct idea poorly expressed, or fluent writing with weak content, both lose marks.
• Format Marks in Writing Tasks: Formal letters and analytical paragraphs carry separate marks for correct format, content, and language — strong content in the wrong format still loses marks. • Extract and Inference Questions: Literature short-answer questions are marked on how well the response draws inference and interpretation from the text, not just factual recall of the plot. |
