Q1. Read the following text and answer the questions (i-vii) that follow:
1. The toy industry in our country is still at a budding stage, catering to a vast consumer base of about a 500 million children. It helps in taking the children to their world where things happen. The use of traditional Indian games and toys in schools makes children connect with their heritage and has a lifelong positive impact.
2. Toys can be used to teach many difficult concepts very easily, exploring a child’s interests and curiosity. Indian traditional games like skipping, gilli-danda, sagargote (five stones), conventional board games, and outdoor games have always brought children together, encouraging teamwork and social interaction.
3. Our ancestors have been preserving the culture of storytelling by making toys which show a perspective of life. Several influences also led to a different set of toys depicting stories from Indian culture. Every state in India has its own set of traditional toys usually made from clay, wood, coir, coconut shell, areca nut, shells, pebbles, bamboo, pedanus leaves, terracotta, porcelain, and many other locally available items.
4. Every Indian state has their own style and story related to their toy making industry. This contributes to a unique name given to the toys – Kondapalli from Andhra Pradesh, Asharikandi terracotta from Assam, Channapatna from Karnataka, dolls of Vilachery from Tamil Nadu, the lacquered toys and miniature utensils of Varanasi, the terracotta toys of Gujarat, the wooden toys and colourful puppets of Rajasthan, and many more.
5. The promotion of indigenous toys is very important. They not only reflect the cultural heritage, traditions, and stories, but also empower the local artisans by providing them with an opportunity towards entrepreneurship. They develop the skills of the artisans like carving, painting, and weaving. It helps in community development, ensuring solidarity, promoting cultural exchange and appreciation of their work and heritage globally. This leads to sustainable development too. Consequently, this promotes an inclusive and globally connected world while celebrating the richness of indigenous cultures.
