• Total Marks: 100 (Theory: 80 + Internal Assessment: 20).
• Two Levels: CBSE offers Mathematics Standard (Code 041) and Mathematics Basic (Code 241). Both follow the identical syllabus and unit-wise marks below — Basic is intended for students not continuing Maths in Class 11-12, with comparatively simpler questions. • Highest-Weightage Unit: Algebra carries 20 of the 80 theory marks. • Unit-wise Theory Split: Number Systems (6), Algebra (20), Coordinate Geometry (6), Geometry (15), Trigonometry (12), Mensuration (10), Statistics and Probability (11). • Internal Assessment (20 marks): Pen Paper Test + Multiple Assessment (10), Lab Practical (5), Portfolio (5). • Question Mix: MCQs, Very Short Answer, Short Answer, Long Answer, and case-based questions, most with internal choices. Sample 1-Mark Question (MCQ): The pair of linear equations x + 2y = 5 and 3x + 6y = 15 represents lines that are:
Step-wise Marking Scheme:
• Correct Answer (1 Mark): Coincident (the pair has infinitely many solutions). • Reasoning: Since a₁/a₂ = b₁/b₂ = c₁/c₂ (1/3 = 2/6 = 5/15), the two equations represent the same line, so they are coincident. Sample 5-Mark Question (Long Answer - Geometry): Prove that the tangent at any point of a circle is perpendicular to the radius through the point of contact. Using this, find the length of the tangent drawn from a point 13 cm away from the centre of a circle of radius 5 cm.
Marking Allocation:
1. Correct theorem statement with a clear, labelled figure (1 Mark). 2. Correct proof by contradiction — assuming the tangent is not perpendicular and showing the radius would not be the shortest distance (2 Marks). 3. Correct application of the Pythagoras theorem to the numerical part — √(13² − 5²) = 12 cm (2 Marks). 📌 Evaluation Criteria followed by Board Examiners in Mathematics:
• Step Marking: Every intermediate correct step earns marks independently, even if the final answer is wrong.
• No Negative Marking, But No Working = No Marks: A correct final answer with no visible working can lose most of the marks for that question. • Geometry Proofs Need Every Step: Theorem-based questions expect a correctly labelled figure and every logical step stated — skipping steps, even with the correct conclusion, costs marks. |
