SECTION A – (Reading)
1. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow :
1 Stepping out of our air-conditioned jeep, we could feel the weight of the desert’s oppressive heat. Mansukh Prajapati greeted us warmly outside his workshop. A potter by trade, Prajapati has been experimenting with clay to produce a variety of durable goods, many of which were on display in the office outside his lab.
2 We were thirsty and were grateful when he asked us if we wanted water. We had run out of bottled water, and there wasn’t any sign of a store nearby to restock. He gave us cups and beaming with pride, said, ‘Please, have this cold water from my fridge.’
3 Baffled, we looked more closely at the terracotta box in front of us. It was made entirely of clay, except for a glass door and a plastic tap at the bottom. While sipping the refreshingly cool water, we looked around and found no electrical cord, no battery, just clay.
4 Prajapati explained how this clay fridge, ‘Mitticool’, works. The water from an upper chamber seeps through the side walls, cooling the lower chamber through evaporation. The fridge consumes no electricity, is 100 percent biodegradable and produces zero waste during its lifetime. An ingenious invention.
5 Prajapati doesn’t work for NASA or Whirlpool, and he doesn’t have a Ph.D. in quantum physics or an MBA from Harvard. In fact, he did not even finish high school. His R&D lab is a simple open-air room with clay in various stages arranged on the floor and an oven tucked in the corner is a far cry from the sprawling campuses of GE and Whirlpool, which swarm with hundreds of engineers and scientists.
1.1 On the basis of your understanding of the above passage, answer any eight of the following questions :
(a) How did the desert greet the narrator ?
(b) Why did the narrator feel grateful to Prajapati ?
(c) Why was Prajapati ‘beaming with pride’ ?

(e) Why did Prajapati call his fridge, ‘Mitticool’ ?
(f) How does the clay fridge work ?
