Ans. An absolute monarchy means rule by a king or a queen who exercises absolute power. The Vatican City, Saudi Arabia , Oman , Qatar and Swaziland are examples of absolute monarchy.

Q 2. What is direct democracy? Is it practical to follow it in India?

Ans. In direct democracy, the government is elected and run directly by the people . No, it is not practical to follow direct democracy in India due to large population.

Q3. Why is India called a democratic republic?

Ans. India is called a democratic republic because both the President and the Government are elected by the people.

Q4. What are the two principles on which democracy is based?

Ans. Liberty and equality are the two principles on which democracy is based.

Ans. Democratic institutions at the local level are called village panchayats. They provide a platform to the people to discuss and decide on matters concerning their life in the village. The village panchayat helped Susheela in terminating

Ans. The citizens in a democratic government participate in the government through elections.All adult men and women vote to elect their representatives. The elected representatives govern the country on behalf of the people. If people are not satisfied with the government they can remove it in the next elections.
 
Q.3. Explain why democracy is much more than just a form of government.
 
Ans. Democracy is much more than just a form of government. It is also a form of society and a form of economy. Justice, freedom and human dignity are values of democracy. Only when these values are deeply embedded in the political, social and economic life of the people, can democracy can be made meaningful.

Ans. People exercise their political power through elections. All adult men and women vote to elect their representatives and in this way they participate in the governance of the country. The elected representatives takes part in the governance of the country, on behalf of the people. If people are not satisfied with their government, they can remove it in the next elections
 
Q.2 What do you understand by rule of law?
 
Ans. Rule of law means all are equal before the law. It makes no distinction between the rich and the poor, or the educated and the uneducated. In doing so it ensures that no one is above the law. Rule of law also provides protection to individuals against social evils like sati, child marriage, untouchability and various other forms of discrimination.
 
Q.3 What is democratic society?
 
Ans. A democratic society is one in which evils like untouchability and caste system are not practised. It provides equal opportunities for growthand development. No one is given more privilege than the others on the basis of race , colour , religion or place of birth.
 
Q.4 What is economic democracy?
 
Ans. Economic democracy means that all should have equal opportunities to be employed or to set up their own businesses. It also means, absence of exploitation- workers should not be exploited by owners and peasants should not be exploited by landlords. There should be equal wage for equal work, irrespective of gender.
