• Total Marks: 100 (Theory: 80 + Internal Assessment: 20).
• New Prescribed Textbook: For 2026-27, NCERT has replaced the earlier Science textbook with Exploration (13 chapters), which integrates Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Earth Science into one book rather than separate blocks. • Highest-Weightage Unit: Unit I — World of Living carries 27 of the 80 theory marks. • Unit-wise Theory Split: Unit I — World of Living: cells, tissues, reproduction, diversity & classification (27); Unit II — Matter: Its Nature and Behaviour: mixtures & separation, atomic structure (25); Unit III — Motion, Force, Work and Sound (23); Unit IV — Earth as a System (5). • Optional Advanced Level: From 2026-27, CBSE also offers an optional Science Advanced Level exam (10 chapters, HOTS-weighted) for students aiming at competitive exams, in addition to — not instead of — this Standard/Proficiency paper. • Internal Assessment (20 marks): Periodic Assessment, Practical Work, and Portfolio. • Question Mix: VSA/objective, Assertion-Reasoning, SA, LA, and Source/Case/Passage-based integrated questions, with roughly 33% internal choice. Step-wise Marking Scheme:
• Correct Answer (1 Mark): Mitochondria. • Reasoning: Mitochondria carry out cellular respiration, converting nutrients into ATP, the energy currency used by the cell for its activities. Sample 5-Mark Question (Long Answer - Motion, Force, Work and Sound): A car starting from rest accelerates uniformly at 2 m/s² for 10 seconds. Calculate (a) the final velocity, (b) the distance travelled, and explain what the area under a velocity-time graph for this motion represents.
Marking Allocation:
1. Correct formula and calculation for final velocity — v = u + at = 0 + (2 × 10) = 20 m/s (2 Marks). 2. Correct formula and calculation for distance — s = ut + ½at² = 0 + ½(2)(10)² = 100 m (2 Marks). 3. Correct explanation that the area under a velocity-time graph gives the distance travelled (1 Mark). 📌 Evaluation Criteria followed by Examiners in Science:
• Step Marking on Numericals: Each correct step (formula, substitution, unit) earns marks independently, even if the final numerical answer is wrong.
• Diagrams are Compulsory Where Asked: Cell structure, tissue, and force diagrams need correct labelling — an answer without one loses marks even if the explanation is accurate. • Activity-Based Reasoning: Since Exploration is activity-based, questions increasingly ask students to interpret an observation or experiment rather than just recall a definition — answers should reason from the given data, not just state a rule. |
