CBSE Class 11 Biology - Sample Paper Blueprint & Marking Schemes Review section-wise weightage, model papers, physiology and cell biology problems, and step-wise mark allocations for the 2026-27 session. 📋 CBSE Class 11 Biology Exam Pattern & Marks Distribution (2026-27):
• Total Marks: 100 (Theory: 70 + Practical: 30).
• Highest-Weightage Unit: Human Physiology carries 18 of the 70 theory marks, the largest single unit. • Unit-wise Theory Split: Diversity of Living Organisms (15), Structural Organisation in Plants and Animals (10), Cell: Structure and Function (15), Plant Physiology (12), Human Physiology (18). • Practical Component (30 marks): One major experiment (5), one minor experiment (4), slide preparation (5), spotting (7), and practical record + viva voce (4), plus a project. • Question Mix: MCQs, diagram/labelling questions, case-based questions, Short Answer, and Long Answer questions, most with internal choices. Sample 1-Mark Question (MCQ): Which of the following is the site of the light-independent reactions (Calvin cycle) of photosynthesis?
Step-wise Marking Scheme:
• Correct Answer (1 Mark): The stroma of the chloroplast. • Reasoning: While the light reactions occur on the thylakoid membrane, the Calvin cycle (dark/light-independent reactions) takes place in the stroma, using the ATP and NADPH generated earlier to fix carbon dioxide. Sample 5-Mark Question (Long Answer - Human Physiology): Describe the mechanism of double circulation in humans, explaining the pathway of blood through the pulmonary and systemic circuits with a labelled diagram.
Marking Allocation:
1. Correctly describing the pulmonary circuit — deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle to the lungs and back oxygenated to the left atrium (2 Marks). 2. Correctly describing the systemic circuit — oxygenated blood from the left ventricle to the body and back deoxygenated to the right atrium (2 Marks). 3. Correct, clearly labelled diagram of the heart and blood flow direction (1 Mark). 📌 Evaluation Criteria followed by Board Examiners in Biology:
• Diagrams are Compulsory Where Asked: Questions on physiology, cell structure, or plant anatomy expect a correctly labelled diagram — an answer without one loses marks even if the written explanation is accurate.
• Step Marking: Each correctly explained stage of a process (e.g. stages of mitosis, steps of a physiological pathway) earns marks independently, even if a later step is incomplete. • Precise Terminology: Biology answers are marked closely against exact NCERT terminology (e.g. "light-independent reactions" vs. an approximate description), so precise scientific vocabulary matters for full marks. |
