THE LIFE OF BUDDHA
It was in the fifth century, when Prince Gautama was born in Kapilvastu, the capital of Shakya. The Raja at this time was Suddhodana, and he was married to the two daughters of the Raja of the neighbouring tribe, the Koiyans.
Now the young prince was born into great luxury, and he was cosseted and adored by the household on all sides. When he learned to walk there were arms outstretched in every direction, but the young prince shunned them all and took seven steps to the north, seven steps to the east, seven steps to the west and seven steps to the south, which signalled to all his spiritual conquest of the earth.
The prince was trained in every sport, becoming an expert in all kinds of martial skills. He was well versed in the arts, and he married, at a very early age, Yasodhara, who he won in a contest at the age of only sixteen. It was not long after this marriage that Yasodhara bore him a son, who he named Rahul.
Gautama lived the life of a normal Indian ruler, eating and drinking plenty, although he was a wise man, he thought a lot about the world round him. For it had been his oyster for as long as he could remember and he polished his own little pearl daily, enjoying what he saw in his reflection.
