Jahangir, the fourth Mughal emperor who ruled India in the 17th century, was also a renowned naturalist. As a young prince he went along with his father Akbar on his campaign in Kashmir. There he fell in love with the natural splendour of Himalayan mountains, streams, trees and flowers. This was the beginning of a lifelong love for nature. Nurjahan, his wife, encouraged his interest in nature by laying out gardens in various parts of Kashmir.

Jahangir was gifted with powers of keen observation. He provided detailed description of flowers in his memoirs, Tuzuk-i-Jahangir, that form a botanical study of its own kind. Jahangir’s descriptions of some of India’s common flowers are simple and accurate. He nursed a pair of infant cranes for five years and took them with him on his journeys to watch their courtship habits. Keen observation fill many pages of his memoirs.
