Class 12 English Sample Paper with Solutions

1. Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow:

1. Kids these days are under increasing pressure. And they all react to it in different ways. Some act up or throw tantrums, while some develop physical symptoms. Others end up taking to drugs or self harm. Parents need to realize that ‘ if a kid is acting out, it isn’t necessarily ‘just a stage’, says Margary Lapp, a US marriage and family therapist.

2. Very often, these days, kids are stressed out over academics. In competitive communities, there’s always a pressure to be on a track that will lead to success. And then there is a trickle down effect. Parents themselves are under stress. Both often need to work these days. The pressure to succeed causes stress, which in turn rubs off on the kids. Explains Jody Bove, a clinician and family therapist, ‘The parents come home exhausted and stressed out…the kids aren’t getting the nurturing they need.’ Researchers also see a tie between rapid home growth and rising stress levels. Parents are spending money on expensive homes only to find themselves faced with longer commutes, which places more of a strain on free time and increases stress. In some cases, kids also have to cope with family breakdown. In addition ti the stress of having the family unit broken up, these children also need to deal with ongoing issues such as different sets of rules and may also internalize their parent’s conflict.

3. So what’s a parent to do about this stress? NOTHING! ‘Kids need more time to just chill,’ says Ellen Castleman, a licensed clinical social worker. ‘Make sure there’s enough time out for family events and activities, citing examples like board games, family meals and watching a movie together. ‘Rest and relaxation are stress-reducing,’ she adds. Physical activity is too, although Castleman encourages parents to have kids pursue just one sport at a time. PatriciaL. Brown, a marriage and family therapist, sees kids who are attending too many activities that they don’t have any downtime for play, or what she terms ‘creative, imaginative, social, old-fashioned play.’

4. Kids also want to spend time with their parents, even if they may not seem like they do. ‘Try to spend even five minutes a day one-on-one,’ Bove says. ‘It’s amazing how special it can make a child feel.’

5. It is important that parents sometimes take some time out for themselves. Bove notes that when parents walk in the door at the end of the day, having a few minutes to regroup can be crucial. She also encourages parents to seek help when needed to lessen their load.

6. Sometimes,it may be necessary to seek expert advice ti treat kids’ stress. Lapp advices parents not to delay in dealing with their childrens’ stress symptoms, noting that its better to over-react than under –react. Parents can first educate themselves by doing research, then schedule a consultation with their paediatrician.

7. Counselling for the child or the whole family may also be helpful in figuring out what’s causing stress in the child’s life. Parent support group can also be good resource. ‘Just because somebody loves their child doesn’t mean they have all the tools to handle the different stages of child development’, Lapp notes. In the end, focusing on the present may be the best advice of all.’ The most important thing is what’s going on today,’ Bove says.. ‘It’s not all about colleges and grades.” Go appreciate your kids,” Lapp adds. They want your company. You are not going to get this time back.”
