I. Read the given extracts and answer the following questions briefly.

a) ‘At first we had certain respect for him, but soon we lived in terror of his approach.’

i) Who is being referred to in the above line?

ii) Why did the recruits respect him?

iii) Why did they start living in terror of his approach?

b) ‘He was our hero, and we used to tell each other that he was so tough that you could

hammer nails into him without his noticing it’

i) Who is ‘he’ as their hero?

ii) Where did he come from?

iii)What was ‘he’ to do over there?

c)’…I have decided that Private Quelch is just the man for the job .’

Of course it was a joke for the days afterwards; a joke and joy to all of us.

i) Who is the speaker of the first line? What job has he given to Private Quelch?

ii) What joke is being talked about here?

iii) Who are ‘us’ here? Why was the joke a joy for all of them?

II. Answer the following words in 30-40 words each.

1) How did Quelch get the nickname “Professor”?

3) Why were the writer and his batchmates ‘thunderstruck’ when Quelch tried to correct Corporal Turnbull? 

4) How did Private Quelch annoy Corporal Turnbull?

5) Did the punishment given to Private Quelch change his attitude? How did he behave in the kitchen?

III)Answer the following in 100 – 120 words.

Private Quelch knew ‘too much’. Give reasons to prove that in spite of all his knowledge , he was unable to win the admiration of his superiors as well as his colleagues. What negative values or qualities should he have avoided?
