1. Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow :

SCIENCE AND HUMAN WELFARE

Science has transformed human life beyond all imagination. Thanks to the efforts of a few scientists, man is no longer a helpless toy in the hands of Nature, but the proud master of the three worlds of land, air and water. We live more and have our being in Science. The triumph of science is seen everywhere in life. According to Bertrand Russell, science has changed the face of the earth and the world has changed more during the last 150 years than during 4000 years prior to that. In fact, now, we have ceased to look upon trains or motor cars, electricity or telegraph as marvels of Science. Can we visualize the shape of things before the birth of science ? People living fifty miles away from London had hardly seen the world’s greatest city. Books were few and copies by hand by costly scribes and so they remained the preserve of only a few. Communication was almost hon-existent, except for those who could afford to send special messengers. Small-pox and other diseases reaped a harvest of people. In short disease, ignorance and suspicion were prevalent everywhere.

It has been found that the energy generated by the release of an atom bomb is sufficient to burn about four square kilometers of land, say about 80,000 people. But if the same energy is applied for constructive purposes, it is capable of working wonders. It has been found that one pound of uranium, when converted into energy is equivalent to 15,000 tons of coal. Therefore, the lovers of peace denounce the atomic weapons and not the atomic energy.

Before us, now lies a new era in which the power of atomic energy has been released. That age will either be of complete devastation or in which new sources of power will lighten the labor of mankind and increase the standard or living all over the world. It is for us to decide, whether we will destroy the world with atomic bomb or rebuild it with atomic energy.

Fear at the time of going for an interview is quite natural, so this is acceptable. However, what is not accpetable is fear morphing into panic, which can diminish a performance in many ways. It is perfectly natural to be a bit nervous before an interview, but there is an element of energy present even in this nervousness and if properly harnessed, this energy can help you to present yourself with agility, passion and conviction. But in order to do so you need to control your nerves in a positive way. Before the interview, you should try to visualize an enthusiastic interviewer, who is reacting positively to your responses. Picture yourself delivering a clear and interesting presentation, admit to yourself that you may be nervous, but you are going to convert your nervousness into positive energy.

Their interest lies in what you have to say and show them about yourself.

3. Read the following passage carefully.

Kamla was seven and smart, She was already very conscious that she was one of the short girls in the class. Now having to wear spectacles would be an added misery as other girls will stare and giggle at her. When Kamla went to school the next day, wearing the horrid spectacles, all that she had feared really did happen. She asked her best friend to hide her spectacles. When her class teacher entered the class, Kamla was all jittery. She pulled her spectacles off her nose and shove them into the desk. Now Kamla felt good. She realized that the spectacles made the bridge of her nose hurt; they hurt her behind her ears as well and that made her temples throb.

But the problem soon began. Kamla could not read what was written on the black board.

During the short break, her spectacles were gone. Soon there was commotion. Word got around that Kamla’s spectacles were missing. Kamla stood up and spoke in a trouble voice, “Please teacher, my spectacles are gone from my desk”. “I have good news for you Kamla”, said her teacher. “I saw you pushing the spectacles into your desk. During the short break I took them and kept them here”, she said pointing to her own desk. Kamla promptly put the spectacles on and never thought of taking them off, again.

in India. She/he is of opinion that instead of just banning such ads, the government should order the closure of tobacco industry to eliminate the evil from its root. She/he decided to write a letter to the editor of a national daily expressing her/his views and suggestions. Using the information given below, together with your own ideas, write Mishti/Minish’s letter in not more than 150 words.
