SECTION A

(READING: 20 Marks)

1. Read the passage given below and complete the statements that follow:

Cancer has emerged as the second-leading cause of death globally after cardiovascular diseases. Proportion of deaths due to cancer around the world increased from 12% in 1990 to 15% in 2013 while the number of new cases almost doubled in India during the period. In India, deaths from the disease have increased by 60%, according to the latest report 'Global Burden of Cancer-2013', released worldwide on Friday. "Even if we adjust for the rise in population in India over this period, the new cancer cases have increased by 30% per unit population and deaths have risen by 10%, "says Lalit Dandona, co-author of the study and Professor at the Public Health Foundation of India and Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation. In 2013, there were 14.9 million new cancer cases registered globally, whereas 8.2 million people died due to the disease. The report is based on a global study of 28 cancer groups in 188 countries by a consortium of international researchers from University of Washington and Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation.

The report suggests that new cases of virtually all types of cancer are rising in countries globally -regardless of income-but the death rates from cancer are falling in many countries

8 primarily due to its prevention and treatment. However, it says there is a threat of increasing incidence in developing countries due to ill-equipped health systems. While incidence of breast cancer is highest in India as well as globally, most number of cancer deaths in India are caused due to stomach cancer, which is globally the second most common reason for death. (a) Cancer is next only to __________ diseases resulting in deaths, worldwide. (b) The report __________ claimed that cancer deaths in India have risen. (c) The death rates from cancer in many countries are coming down mainly due to __________ and treatment. (d) The developing countries have failed to control the death rate due to __________. (e) All types of cancer are on an increase regardless of __________. (f) The incidence of __________ is the highest in India as well as globally. (g) Most number of cancer deaths in India are caused due to _________. (h) The synonym of the word phrase 'come out' is __________ (last para)

2. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow : (2x4)+(1x4)=12 (1)

It's an exciting time to be an Indian - our country is poised on the edge of accelerated economic growth. But this is not possible without a stable environment. It is essential, therefore, that we focus on protecting our natural infrastructure, which forms the bedrock of our economy.

(2) The flow of benefits from our ecosystem is immense - it supplies clean air, water and climate security. Globally, 200-300 million people depend directly, or indirectly, on forests for food. Some studies suggest that ecosystem goods and services account for over half the 'gross domestic product of the poor'. This is particularly significant for India where 200 million people live in and around forests, relying heavily on these ecosystems for their daily survival. More than 600 Indian rivers either originate from, or are fed by, tiger landscapes and these habitats supply water to cities hundreds of kilometres away. The Corbett Tiger Reserve, for instance, forms the catchment area of the Ramganga reservoir that provides 190 million cubic-metres of drinking water to New Delhi. In Maharashtra, Nagpur is dependent on the Pench

12Lake, harboured in the Pench Tiger Reserve, for its water supply. The economic repercussions of neglecting the environment are severe. (3) The rights of women and children, too, are inextricably linked to environmental issues. In rural areas, women walk several hours every day to get water for their families. As wells dry up, girls are more likely to be pulled out of school to help their mothers with collecting water. The World Bank estimates that 21% of communicable diseases in India can be linked to unsafe water with diarrhoea causing more than 1,600 deaths every single day. (4) This begs the question - what should India do ? As with all effective solutions, the answer is simple to give but difficult to implement. We need to start at the very source of our policy-making, designing laws and programmes that are holistic and recognise the interconnectedness between the environment and development. This needs to percolate to the ground level particularly in landscapes where communities and wildlife live in close proximity. The key lies in finding solutions that allow communities access to the same benefits as you and me, while safeguarding the precious natural resources they live alongside. Environmental impacts and appropriate mitigation measures need to be inbuilt in projects, not tacked on as an afterthought to secure a clearance from the ministry of environment and forests. (5) The challenges lying ahead for India are not easy but there is immense potential to transform them into opportunities. We must involve forest departments, local communities and other stakeholders to find solutions that benefit both people and wildlife. It is a long road but one which we must travel together with all stakeholders. (a) What is the main concern of the writer ? (b) What benefits do you get from your eco-system ? (c) How are the rights of women and children linked to environmental issues ? (d) What steps are to be taken to keep a balance between environment and economic growth ? (e) What is the antonym of the word 'bedrock' ? (para-1) (f) What is meant by the word 'reservoir' ? (para-2) (g) What is meant by the word 'repercussion' ? (para-2) (h) What is meant by the word 'mitigate' ? (para-4)
