Reading books is just one aspect of learning. This is an exercise in information gathering. It is how your brain processes the information that affects the degree of learning. The first and the foremost criteria to become a genius in one’s chosen field is to have great curiosity and unending hunger to discover more. Next criteria is a good sense of observation which helps you to correlate your findings with what you see or experience in the real world. Experiments are must to test your findings against possible variables and in real life situations. And last, but not the least criteria is an urge to work really hard on your area of interest.

2. You must have read about cells and DNA in your science books. Discuss Richard Ebright’s work in the light of what you have studied. If you get an opportunity to work like Richard Ebright on projects and experiments, which field would you like to work on and why?

Ebrights’ work are directly related to Biology. Discovery of cell’s structure has helped scientific community to understand the way any organism functions and grows. This has helped scientists to discover how disease causing organisms attack us and grow inside our body. This must have given them idea to counter a particular disease . DNA fingerprinting is helping police to pinpoint the real culprit. This was not possible when DNA was discovered. Monarch butterflies present an amazing example of a tiny creature migrating thousands of miles from North America to the rainforest of Amazon. Some day we can be in a position to develop as sturdy and reliable navigation system as that of the Monarch butterflies

Answer
Ebright‘s mother encouraged his interest in learning. She took him on trips, bought him, telescopes, microscopes, cameras, mounting materials, and other equipments and help him in many other ways. Since Ebright didn’t have any friends, his mother was his only companion and who bought friends home for him. If Ebright was sitting idle, she would find him work to learn. His mother also bought him the book ‘The travels of Monarch X’ opened the world of science to the eager young collector.

2. How did a book become a turning point in Richard Ebright‘s life?

Richard, as a child, collected many butterflies. By the time he was in the second grade, he had collected all 25 species of butterflies around his hometown. That would have been the end of his butterfly collecting but then his mother got him a children’s book ‘The travels of monarch X’. That book which told Hao monarch, butterflies travel to Central America, opened the world of science to the eager young collector.

3. What does Ebright learn when he does not win anything at the science fair?

In seventh grade Ebright, got a sense of what real science is when he entered the country fair and lost. He was very disheartened but he realised the winners had tried to do real experiment, not just make a need display. This created in him, the competitive spirit which drives Ebright to this day.

4. What experiments and project does he then undertake?
Answer
1) Cause of a viral disease that kills nearly all monarch caterpillars every few years. He tried raising monarch caterpillars in presence of beetles.
2) Testing theory that Viceroy butterflies copy monarchs. He thought viceroys copy monarchs to avoid getting eaten by birds. He was to see whether, in fact, birds would eat monarchs.
3) He also studied the migration of butterflies by tagging them.
4) He also began a research which led to discovery of an unknown insect hormone, leading to new theory on life of cells.

A5. For making a scientist, we need an eager mind, curiosity, and the will to win for the right reasons (being able to do the best job he could) and add willpower and determination, Ebright had these qualities.

Ebright was a champion, debater, a public speaker, a good canoeist , and an outdoor person. He was also an expert photographer of nature and scientific exhibits.

Good morning everyone, I am Richard Ebright and I have done a lot of things in my life. I discovered a lot and so can you. Science is amazing. It is abstract, logical, every thing. I never gave up on my passion, even though I failed multiple times as a child. I didn’t get much feedback on my experiments but then I decided to never give up and learn from mistakes.
