(2) Contrast - Contrast is the difference in quality between two instances of an art element, or using opposing qualities next to each other.

(3) Variety - Variety refers to the use of different qualities of an art element to create a desired visual effect such as variety of shapes, colours etc.

(4) Repetition - When one or more components of the design are repeated in a predetermined manner we call it repetition.

(5) Rhythm - Rhythm is a principle of design that refers movement, created by the careful placement of repeated elements in an artwork.

(6) Pattern - Patterns are groups of elements that repeat in a predictable manner. Pattern is a repetition of an element such as lines, shapes or colours.

(7) Proportion - Proportion is the relationship of sizes between different parts of a work. For example, how wide it is compared to how tall it is.

(8) Harmony - Harmony in art and design is the visually satisfying effect of combining similar and related elements to create a pleasing artwork for the eyes.

Q.5) Define Radial Balance.

Ans-: Radial balance is created by distributing parts evenly in all directions starting from a centre point.

Short Answer Type Questions

Q.1) Explain the concept of Balance. What are its types?

Ans-: Balance is the distribution of the visually interesting elements in an artwork. If all the visually interesting elements in an artwork are centered in one spot, the work is off-balance and the viewer’s gaze will be stuck in one place, ignoring the rest of the work. Balance is an arrangement of lines, shapes, forms, shades, colours and texture in a way that the attention is drawn throughout the artwork. Some simple types of balance are symmetric and asymmetric.

Q.2) What is a Symmetric Balance? Explain.

Ans-: Symmetric balance is created by the equal division of shapes or components in a design or composition. This implies arranging shapes, colours and shades of equal size and weight on both the sides of the central line or point at equal distance. Symmetric balance is also called formal balance, as it tends to lead to stable and orderly designs which are less
dynamic.

Q.3) What is an Asymmetric Balance? Explain.

Ans-: Asymmetric balance is a type of balance created by unlike things. One large common shape might be balanced by a small irregular one; a dominant element of dull color can be balanced by a patch of something bright; a small area with lots of texture or detail might balance a larger smoother or less varied area etc.

Q.4) What is Radial Balance? Explain.

Ans-: Radial balance is created by distributing parts evenly in all directions starting from a centre point. Radial balance begins from a single point and spreads out evenly in all directions radiating from that point.

Q.5) Explain the term contrast with its significance.

Ans-: Contrast is the difference in quality between two instances of an art element, or using opposing qualities next to each other. Black and white are contrasting values. Organic/curvy and geometric/angular are contrasting shapes. Rough and smooth are contrasting textures. The greater the contrast, the more something will stand out and call attention to it. High contrast makes a work more vibrant, vigorous and lively – it “pops” more. Low contrast work is more quiet, calm, subtle, reflective and soothing.
