SUBJECT: ENGLISH TOPIC: READING SKILL

I. Read the passage given below carefully and answer the questions that follow.

1) When I was six, I once saw a beautiful picture in a book titled True Stories From Nature. The picture was about an ancient forest, and it had a picture of a boa constrictor, which was just about to swallow an animal. The caption below the picture read,” Boa constrictors swallow their prey without chewing it. After that they are not able to move around for days and then they sleep through the next six months that they need for digestion!”

2) After seeing the picture, I was in deep thought about the adventures of the jungle, about boa constrictors and their prey. I wanted to draw something, so I took a coloured pencil and pulled out my drawing book and drew a sketch. I showed my masterpiece to the grown-ups and asked them, “Does this drawing look frightening to you?” They replied, “Frightening? Why should anyone be frightened by a hat?” They did not understand my drawing. I had not drawn a hat! It was a picture of a boa constrictor with an elephant in its stomach. So I decided to make another drawing. I drew the inside of a boa constrictor so that the grown-ups could understand the drawing clearly – you see, grown-ups need to have things clearly explained to them.

3) The grown-ups still did not understand my drawing. They thought for a while and then gave me a piece of advice. “Why don’t you lay aside your drawings of boa constrictors and devote your time to geography, history, arithmetic, and grammar?” they asked. Grown-ups never understand anything by themselves and it is tiresome for children to be always and forever explaining things to them. So, I kept my drawings aside and forgot about becoming an artist. I chose another profession and learned to pilot aeroplanes.
