Answer: There are a number of benefits of physical activities for children with special needs. These are as follows
(i) Improves Fitness It strengthens the heart muscles, thereby improving cardiovascular efficiency, lung efficiency and exercise endurance. This helps in controlling repetitive behaviour among disabled children.
(ii) Develops Social Behaviour Besides improving fitness, physical activity develops social relationships with other children, teammates and teachers. This brings positive changes in the social behaviour of these children.
(iii) Makes Improvement in Cognitive Abilities Physical activity enhances the metabolism of the brain in children. It leads to cognitive improvement in children with special needs allowing them to acquire new skills, learn new things and focus on specific goals.

Question. Explain in detail about Paralympic Games.
Answer: The Paralympic Games are a major international sports event involving athletes with various disabilities such as mobility disabilities, amputations, blindness and cerebal palsy.
The originator of the Paralympic games is Sir Ludwig Guttmann. He started Paralympic movement that finally developed into Paralympic Games.
The Paralympic games are governed by the International Paralympic Committee who holds the responsibility of organising the games at an interval of four years. It organises both summer and winter olympics.
The first Paralympic Games were held in Rome in 1960. However, the 'Paralympic' word was officially used in 1988 Summer Olympics, which were held in Seoul. The motto of Paralympic Games is 'Spirit in Motion' which was introduced in 2004 at the Paralympic games Athens.
Its earlier motto was 'Mind, Body and Spirit' which was introduced in 1994. The paralympic games are truly inspirational as the athletes in these games display great determination and courage to overcome mental and physical obstacles.

Question. Disuss about 'Deaflympics' in detail.
Answer: Deaflympics are the world's second oldest multiple sports after Olympics. The Deaflympics are an International Olympic Committee sanctioned event at which deaf athletes compete at an international level. The Deaflympics games are held after every four years.
The first Deaflympics Games were held in Paris in 1924. In that deaflympics, only 148 deaf athletes from nine European countries participated.
From 1924-1965, these games were officially known as the 'International Games for the Deaf'. From 1966-1999, they were called 'World Games for the Deaf'. Since 2001, these games are known as 'Deaflympics'.
In Deaflympics the starter's gun bullhorn commands or refree's whistles are not used, rather flags or any visual signals are used to alert participants.
The motto of Deaflympics is 'Equality through sports'. The four colours of the logo i.e. red, green, yellow and blue, represent the four regional confederations of the International Committee of Sports for the Deaf viz. Europe, Asia Pacific, Pan-America and Africa. The circle in the middle represents an eye as deaf people are very visual.
The athletes, to complete in Deaflympics, must have a hearing loss of minimum 55 decible in their better ear.
So, it can be said the Deaflympics provide ample opportunities to persons with hearing disability to participate in elite sports.

Answer: Five strategies to make physical activities accessible for children with special needs are as follows
(i) Inclusive Classrooms It means development of education laws in such a way that children with special needs get education within the normal classrooms along with other children so that they are well accepted in society.
(ii) Assistive Technology It refers to creating devices, tools or equipment that help children with special needs to participate in learning activities. These can be bigger balls, balls with bells, balls attached to strings to bring them back to the students etc.
(iii) Adaptive Physical Education Depending on the students' disability, a separate, adaptive class or modifications within a game or changing the rules of the game or sport to some extent can help the students in a big way.
(iv) Creating Specific Environment Students with special needs can be provided with a specific play area with special facilities as needed by them. Loud music or glaring lights often cannot be tolerated by these children; so a lot of natural lighting should be there.
(v) Positive Behaviour In physical education classes, teachers should show positive behaviour and healthy interactions with such children and avoid negative behaviour. The method is to "Prevent, Teach, Reinforce". This means that material should be taught through positive interactions, the lesson reinforced should be by referring back to behavioural expectations and then only evaluating progress.
