(Comprehension)

I. Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow: (12 marks)

1. When Frank and I stepped through the post office doors, there was a crowd gathered, gazing at the new fixture on the wall. I had to get closer, and that was where being a girl that's scrawnier than a wire fence came in handy. Fortunately, Frank, my twin of eleven years, was just the same.

2. "Come on." I said, grabbing his hand, and we slid through the cracks between people until we got to the front.

3. Finally, I got a good look. It was fixed to the plaster next to the postmaster's window, the place of honour usually reserved for the Wanted posters. Beady-eyed Roger Smith, the bank robber, still hung there, but even he had been pushed aside for something more important.

4. A telephone. The first one in town. The thought of talking into that box — of making my voice sail through wires in the sky — it took over my brain.

5. "Frank," I whispered. "I have to use that telephone."

6. "Liza — " he began, but I cut him off. We two thought so much alike, I had Frank's questions answered before he even asked.

7. "You're right," I said. "It costs five cents and I don't have it. But look." I pulled him over to the window of Paulson's Variety Store. "You see those?" I pointed to a handful of shimmery rocks spread on black velvet. Some were a shiny gray, others yellow as cheese. Frank's eyebrows screwed up and I could tell he wasn't following.

8. "If I found one of those, I bet they'd pay me for it." I explained.

9. With a shake of his head, Frank said. "But Liza — "

10. I held up a hand — he couldn't tell me anything I didn't already know. "I've got that figured, too. I'll bet we could find some in the mine."

11. We spent half the morning on the dusty road to the mine. Ma packed a lunch, but said she couldn't understand walking all that way for rocks. She thought we were off to search the dry river bed, and I didn't correct her.

12. We reached the old mine around noon. Once my eyes got used to the dim light, I gazed around, hoping to see shimmery rocks littering the floor, but dust was all I saw.

13. Just then, we heard voices coming closer: "Roger, hold it higher." Two men stepped through a gap in the far wall. One of them was Roger Smith, the bank robber.

14. "Hey!" The other man pointed at us, then dropped his saddlebags and ran for us.

15. I tried to run, too, but met up with Frank's backside.

16. "That's what you get if you go poking your noses in bad places." Caleb said, as he tied our hands behind us. "

17. "Just let us go, we were looking for some stones so that we could make a phone call" I begged. "We won't tell." But they didn’t listen and walked away.

18. I was about to sink into despair, but Frank distracted me with more twitching.

19. "There," he said. "I'm free."

20. Frank cut me loose and said “Let’s run for it.”

21. “Yes, but first I have another good deed in mind, the best way to begin my new life. I am going to turn in that outlaw.”

22. We rounded the wall and ran smack into someone. Roger Smith was back.

23. "Shh," he whispered. "Caleb thinks I forgot something. I came back to cut you loose."

24. For once, I had a hard time filling my mouth with words.

25. "Now, you stay hidden until I get Caleb away," he whispered.

II. Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow: (10 marks)

1. Norman Gortsby sat on a bench in the park, with his back to the fence. It was some thirty minutes past six and dusk had fallen heavily over the scene. A while later, a young man joined him on the bench. As if to emphasise the fact that he was having a bad time, the new-comer said an angry and very loud expletive as he flung himself into the seat.

2. "You don't seem in a very good temper," said Gortsby to the young man. The young man turned to him with a look which put him instantly on his guard.

3. "You wouldn't be in a good temper if you were in the fix I'm in," he said; "I've done the silliest thing I've ever done in my life."

4. "Yes?" said Gortsby uninterestedly.

5. "I came up this afternoon, meaning to stay at the Patagonian Hotel in Berkshire Square," continued the young man; "when I got there I found it had been pulled down some weeks ago and a cinema theatre had come up on the site. The taxi driver recommended me to another hotel some way off and I went there. I just sent a letter to my people, giving them the address, and then I went out to buy some soap - I'd forgotten to pack any and I hate using hotel soap. Then I strolled about a bit, had a drink at a bar and looked at the shops, and when I came to turn my steps back to the hotel I suddenly realised that I didn't remember its name or even what street it was in. There's a nice predicament for a fellow who hasn't any friends or connections in London! My people won't get my letter till to-morrow; meantime I'm without any money, came out with about a shilling on me, which went in buying the soap and getting the drink, and here I am, wandering about with two pence in my pocket and nowhere to go for the night."

6. There was a pause after the story had been told.

6. Does the young man seem to be absent minded? Give a reason to support your answer. (1)
