Q.1 Read the following poem carefully. [5]

ENTERTAINMENT

The monkey – show is on :

patient girl on haunches

holds the strings,

a baby in her arms.

Two tiny monkeys

in red and purple pantaloons

prepare to dance.

Crowd collects,

forms a circle.

Naked to the waist,

the Master of Ceremonies

drums frenzy, cracks whip,

calls the tricks

to earn applause and copper coins.

The circle thickens as the plot thickens,

children laugh, the untouchable women

smooth their hair. A coolie

grins at me, his white teeth

gleam in the sunlight.

Only the monkeys are sad,

and suddenly

the baby begins to cry.

Anticipating time for payment,

the crowd dissolves.

Some, in shame, part

with the smallest coin they have.

The show moves on. - Nissim Ezekiel

A.2 Read the following passage carefully : [5]

1. The endless struggle between the flesh and the spirit found an end in Greek art. The Greek artists were unaware of it. They were spiritual materialists, never denying the importance of the body and ever seeing in the body a spiritual significance. Mysticism on the whole was alien to the Greeks. Thought and mysticism never go well together and there is little symbolism in Greek art. Athena was not a symbol of wisdom but an embodiment of it and her statues were beautiful, grave women. There could be nothing less akin to the ways of symbolism than their beautiful, normal humanity. Nor did decoration really interest the Greeks. In all their art they were preoccupied with what they wanted to express.

2. Greek art is intellectual art, the art of men who were clear and lucid thinkers, and it is therefore a plain art. They were the followers of ‘Nothing in excess”. The power that made a unified whole of the trilogy of a Greek tragedy, found its most conspicuous expression in Greek architecture. The Greek temple is the creation, par excellence of mind and spirit in equilibrium.

A.3 Read the following passage carefully.

Real praise, the sincere compliment is probably the most useful social tool of all. It’s the valued gold coin of our conversation. Yet today, it is in danger of losing its brightness. For it is greatly misused and not properly exchanged. What is a true compliment? It’s one that benefit both giver and receiver. Once a painter and his young assistant were painting our house. The older man was wearing shiny new shoes. As the man started skillfully painting, my father-in-law said to the boy, “Son, when you can show up on the job to paint a house, wearing new shoes, you will be the master of your trade.” The painter smiled and did the best job. We all like to have our sense of personal worth built up or pointed out. And when one expert adds to another’s sense of dignity and speaks favourably of his skill, he is offering a compliment of the highest and rarest kind.

A compliment differs from flattery as it is objective and it is given without thought of gain. Flattery is often merely lip service or excessive praise given for motives other than expressed. The greatest efforts of the human race have always resulted from the love of praise. This should be inspired in childhood. The wise parents make it a point to compliment a child who deserves it. A woman I know has a 12 year old son who considers washing dishes for his mother a great honour. One night, while washing a large dish, it slipped and crashed on the floor. Then his mother said, “You know, Robert, of all the times you have washed the dishes for me, this is the first time you dropped one”. Anxiety left the boy’s face and he smiled. As one psychologist advises, “Praise virtue and you will find few vices to criticise.”
