(Comprehension)

I. Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow: (12 marks)

The Batonga tribe lived on the land that was to be flooded and they did not want to move further up the valley. In order to convince them to move, schools, clinics and wells were built for them. Some new villages were built close to the water’s edge which gave the Batonga tribe fishing opportunities on the lake. Farming, however, was more difficult as crops did not grow very well as the rich alluvial river soil had been lost.

People were not the only ones who suffered from the disturbance. As the dam began to fill, thousands of animals were getting stuck on islands. This project came to be known as Operation Noah. It was a huge task which proved to be very difficult. Once there, rescuers would be faced with snakes including the deadly black mamba.

An officer climbed a tree in swimming costume and gloves to catch a mamba with a stick.

In all some 7,000 animals were saved during Operation Noah. People tell of monkeys sitting on treetops, unable to swim to shore. The monkeys were starving as every bit of greenery on the trees had been eaten. As they were too afraid of human beings to allow themselves to be rescued, they died and fell into the rising water.

Scientists have determined that hair picked up from thick forests in the Garo hills of Meghalaya five years ago is the best evidence yet of the existence of the creature known in different parts of the world as ‘yeti’ or the ‘abominable snowman’.

According to a report in ‘The Independent’, tests at UK’s Oxford Brookes University, on the hair, which local people believe came from a yeti in the jungles of Meghalaya, have failed to link them with any known spices.

“The hair is the most positive evidence yet that a yeti might possibly exist,” said ape expert Ian Redmond, who is coordinating the research.

The two short hair strands-33mm and 44mm long- were picked up from the thick forests in the Garo hills after a person reported seeing a yeti.

The hills are one of the several places in the world where similar creatures-Bigfoot in the US, the sasquatch in Canada, the sajarang gigi in Indonesia, and the yeti in Nepal-are part of the local stories.

The hair will now be examined under an even more powerful microscope and sent to different laboratories-in Oxford and Cardiff- for DNA testing.

Q2. When and where were the hair strands picked up? (2 marks)
