SOUND

To produce sound, there must be a vibrating source. Vibrating strings such as in musical instruments and human vocal cords produce these types of sounds. Based on the above vibrating sources we can produce sound, but the speed of vibration in each case is different. The number of vibrations per second is known as frequency. If the time required for one complete vibration is short its frequency is higher, on the other hand if the time required is longer its frequency will be smaller.

Transmission of sound
The three most important things for the production of sound are: source of sound, medium, and the listener or receiver.

Source of sound
Every source of sound is in a state of vibration. Sometimes the vibration is a short duration as in the crack of the whip, or the bang of a gun, or in the vibration of air, which you do when you clap your hands together.

Material medium
Vibration is not in itself sufficient to produce the sensation of sound; there must be some material medium to transmit the effect of vibration to the ear of the listener. Sound can travel through solid, liquid, and gas. Sound cannot travel through a vacuum.

Listener (receiver)
The receiver of sound is in our ear; so when sound is transmitted through a material medium we can hear it.

Musical instruments are sources of musical sound. All over the world there are different types of musical notes, which are based on languages, and the culture of the people. This musical sound depends on the technological advancement of the countries. Even the type of musical instrument depends on their own technology, but the working principles of all instruments are similar.

Musical sounds are produced by
• The vibration of strings such as the guitar, kirar, violin and mesenko
• The vibration of air columns in pipes such as flute, saxophone, and washinet.
• The vibration of flat membranes such as drum, and the kebero.
