We use conjunctions to prevent sentences from sounding repetitive and awkward.

Conjunctions

A conjunction is a word that joins single words or groups of words in a sentence.

The most common conjunctions—and, but, and or—are called coordinating conjunctions. Coordinating conjunctions can be used to connect individual nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, phrases, or clauses.

Place a comma before the conjunction in a compound sentence.

We scoured and scrubbed the kitchen sink.

Simon is very relaxed or very lazy.

I have recovered, but my sister is still sick.

Correlative conjunctions are pairs of words used to connect words or phrases in a sentence. Correlative conjunctions include both . . . and, either . . . or, neither . . . nor, and not only . . . but also.

Both Wanda and Emily are right-handed.

Neither the coach nor Ms. Thomas is left-handed
