Bachelors in Technology or Bachelors in Engineering in India

B.Tech or B.E, the abbreviated form of Bachelors of Technology and Bachelors of Engineering is the most wanted degree for every engineering aspirant in India. The completion of this four year program with different streams and specialisation in the concerned streams qualifies one aspirant to achieve the degree. Institutions affliated with universities offer Bachelors in Engineering Degree whereas standalone institutions such as IIT / NIT offer the aspirants a Bachelor in Technology Degree. As there is no difference in streams and fields in the theory and practicals of the B.tech and B.E both of the courses have almost similar content. The stream can be selected as per the interest of the student.

Eligibility:

The three main eligibility criteria expected from the aspirant for enrolling in this degree course are as follows:

  • Completion of Higher secondary education with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as basic subjects with the additional subjects of Computer Science/ Biology
  • Common Entrance Test or the Entrance examination conducted by the particular college or institute.
  • To clear the Counselling of the State Government where the institute is located or the particular institute (as per the policy of the institute). The academic background will also be checked while counselling. For example a counselling pattern followed by NITs will be different from the pattern followed by Institutions affiliated with Universities/ Deemed Universities.

To name a few streams and specialisation as follows:

  1. Civil Engineering
  2. Electronics & Communication Engineering
  3. Electronics Engineering
  4. Information Systems
  5. Mechanical Engineering
  6. Instrumentation Engineering
  7. Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering
  8. Electrical Engineering

Future Prospects / Job Opportunities:

As with any course post the completion, the aspirant has two choices

  1. Higher education in the same field of specialization
  2. Career in Private Sector/ National Service/ Government

Aspirants who intend to pursue higher education have a lot of scope to narrow down their core field of specialization and then go for a Post Gradution ( M.Tech/ M.E) and then complete their doctoral work to venture into academics/ research line. Aspirants who complete their post-graduation in this field have a lot of choices/ options to choose from the government / private sector.

Aspirants who intend to pursue a career immediately upon graduation have no less scope. Candidates with engineering background are much sought after for National Service. Alternatively with the boom of technology the aspirants have the much vaunted after private sector to look out for. Opportunities abound there in the form of Software developers, Architecture specialists, Electronics and Microelectronics specialists, Mechanical and Production Engineering Specialists etc. Those who have chosen the mechanical/ production specialisations have got many opportunities as well to enter the private sector considering the state and potential of the manufacturing units in the country. Aspirants have opportunities in the government sector as well where they can exhibit their unique engineering skillsets. With the advent of campus placements in most of the colleges, candidates have a higher chance of getting placed in one of the lucrative private sector organizations to further their career.
