Punctuation is the system of signs or symbols given to a reader to show how a sentence is constructed and how it should be read. Sentences are the building blocks used to construct written accounts. They are complete statements. Punctuation shows how the sentence should be read and makes the meaning.
1) COMMA (,)
The comma is used to indicate a short pause. It is used:
a. for words, phrases, and clauses in a series.
Example,
A ) "Gandhiji, the Father of the Nation, died on 30th January, 1948.
B ) "Apples, Mangoes and Bananas are my favourites."
C ) "Gandhiji, who was the Father of the Nation, died on 30th January, 1948.
b. when you address a person.
Example,
"Yes, Sir."
c. to separate numbers, dates and address
Example,
I was born on 9th August, 1990 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.
d. When two persons, things or other elements are contrasted, the two are separated by a comma.
Example -
I meant Raj, not Robin.
e. Direct quotations are marked by comma.
Example
She said, "I'm sorry."
2) SEMICOLON (;)
The semicolon represents a stronger pause than a comma. It is used to stress the close relationship between one sentence and another.
Example -
Today we love what tomorrow we hate;today we seek what tomorrow we shun; today we desire what tomorrow we fear.
3) COLON (:)
The colon is used to show that something is to follow.
Example -
The principle parts of a verb in English are: the present tense, the past tense, and the past participle.
4) Semi Colon- It is used to connect independent clauses. It shows a closer relationship between the clauses than a period would show.
Example -
John was hurt; he knew she only said it to upset him.
5) DASH (-)
The dash is used to make an abrupt stop or change of thought.
Example -
A ) It can be - how can it be ?
B ) Rama - the eldest son of the four - was only twelve.
6) EXCLAMATION MARK (!)
The exclamation mark is used after interjections and after phrases and sentences expressing sudden emotion or wish.
Example -
A ) Alas! The old man died.
B ) Wow ! What a beautiful day.
7) INVERTED COMMAS (")
Inverted Commas are used to enclose the exact words of a speaker, or a quotation.
Example -
The Prime Minister said, " We must be ready to sacrifice anything for our motherland."
8) QUESTION MARK (?)
Question Mark is used, instead of the Full Stop, after a direct question.
Example -
Have you finished writing?
9) FULL STOP (.)
The full stop is used to mark the end of a declarative or an imperative sentence. It represents the greatest pause.
Example -
Rohan, Vinay and Sabay are best friends.
10) Hyphen (-) It is used to join two or more words together into a compound term and is not separated by spaces.
Example -
A ) He does part - time job along with his studies.
B ) Karna was well - known for his charity.
11) Apostrophe (') - It is used to indicate the omission of a letter or letters from a word, the possessive case, or the plurals of lowercase letters.
Example -
A) I' ve seen that movie several times.
B ) She wasn't the only one who knew the answer.
Possessive case :
Sara' s dog bit the neighbour.
CAPITAL LETTERS
Capital letters are used:
* To begin a sentence
Example-
Maneesh is my best friend.
* To begin Proper nouns
Example -
Europe, Gandhiji, Heena, Taj Mahal etc.
* To begin the names of books, magazine and newspaper:
Example-
The Bible, The India Today, The Times of India etc.
* To write the pronoun ' I ' and the interjection 'O'
Example -
It is I who has helped you. O God bless all !
* Abbreviations:
Example -
U.N.O. , W.H.O. , U.K.
