Rip Van Winkle was a simple, good natured man who lived in a small village in America. All the men and women of his village liked him. He helped the men in their work and took messages for the women. The children also liked him. He told them interesting stories and taught them to fly kites and shoot marbles. He had a faithful dog called Wolf who was very fond of his master and was always by his side. Rip had a small cottage and a farm but he did not like to work on it. He was very lazy. This made his wife very angry and she was always scolding him for his laziness.
