Intro-
Covid-19 has brought along the threat of a long global economic depression. All major economies around the world are trying to fight it in their own unique ways. India has taken the step of creating self-reliance in its economy by using its rich demography and local demand. Aatmanirbhar bharat abhiyan is at the forefront of the ambitious project to create a self-reliant india in the next 5 years. It aims to develop the country through 5 pillars
Body-
Economy- the first pillar of ABA is to attain a quantum leap in the economy so that we can lift millions of poor people out of poverty.
Infrastructure- the second pillar of ABA is to build nation’s physical and social infrastructure. According to the ABA, a robust infrastructure should be a symbol of modern India.
System of technology- according to ABA, a technologically driven society needs to be a priority for our nation because it can bring people together. When the citizens of this country are together with one aim in their minds, no power can stop us from developing.
Demography- According to ABA, if India is to achieve its objective of becoming a leader of 21st century and overcome the negative impacts of Covid, India’s "Demography" has to be utilised to its full potential.
Demand- India’s young demography is a gold mine of demand, which must be utilised to its full potential. ABA aims at spurring demand by working on the first 4 pillars.
In order to utilize the above 5 pillars, an economic stimulus of Rs. 20 Lac Crore, which is equivalent to 10% of the country's GDP, has been announced. The stimulus will be released in 5 tranches. The poor is most affected by covid crisis. Keeping them in mind, some steps have been taken- In the first tranche, the primary objective is to provide support to India's economic backbone- “MSMEs”. The focus is on injecting liquidity to MSMEs. Further, other liquidity measures are to be adopted for NBFCs, HFCs and power distribution companies. In the second tranche, a special credit facility is announced to street vendors to cater their needs
Agriculture has done well during and after the covid crisis. In order to boost it further, in the third tranche, financial assistance is to be provided for the agriculture and allied sectors. Setting up of farm gate infrastructure, cold storage chains, post-harvest management infrastructure are some of the key areas to receive attention.
Fourth tranche comprises reforms for sectors like coal, defence, airports, power distribution companies, space sector and atomic energy. The fifth tranche is focused on consolidation of PSUs and boosting up job under MGNREGA.
Conclusion-
While the ABA clarifies focus of India in the next few years, economic stimulus has failed to take note of the required economic recovery from rising Fiscal Deficit, Inflation and falling GDP numbers. ABA is an ambitious programme which can change the face of India in the coming decades
