United Nations Security council is the organization responsible for maintaining International peace and security by organizing peacekeeping operations, enacting sanctions and authorizing military sanctions. It is the global watchdog and India, being the largest democracy and biggest nation in south Asian region, deserves a permanent seat at the table.
UNSC organizes peacekeeping operations in unstable regions around the globe. India is one of the largest troop contributors to peacekeeping operations. If India, being a developing nation can do so much for international peace, it depicts India’s focus towards International peace and security. There is no South Asian member in the UNSC permanent council. Indian ocean is considered as one of the most strategic and volatile regions in the world. India, being a leader in south Asian region, needs to represent the region for its safety and security.
Being a founding member of the United nations, India needs to be given a permanent seat to honour its dedication towards International order.
India has been a non-permanent member of UNSC since 1950. It has regularly contributed towards international peace and security. It has been an ardent follower of global rules on security and thus needs to be given the right authority to maintain the same stability in the south Asian region. UNSC is awaiting reforms since the beginning of 21st century. Engagement with Asian emerging nations is long over-due.
Conclusion-
Vested Interests in the UNSC have been resisting inclusion of India in the list of permanent members for a long time. If United Nations is to survive in the long run and maintain its control over international order, it needs to reform itself regularly. Inclusion of new voices is the only way to give space to a new order in global security. Thus, Inclusion of India is not only in the interest of Indian leadership, it is also in the interest of global peace
