Sleep gives our body rest and relaxation. It is also important for our growth, rest and healing. Babies sleep the most as it is essential for their fast growth and development. As we grow older, the older duration of our sleep is reduced. During illness we need more sleep because our body needs rest to recover and heal.

During sleep, both our brain and the body enjoy rest, although our brain is not completely at rest. Our reflexes are still active. That is why we can turn on our sides, scratch ourselves if need be, or brush away a fly or an insect while asleep.

Sleep has two phases REM and non—REM. During REM (Rapid Eye Movement) phase, the brain is more active and we have dreams. The non -REM phase is more useful, for it brings us greater rest.

Our activities during the day determine the quality and duration of sleep at night. The more active we are during the day, the better are the chances of sleep at night. The inability to sleep is called ‗insomnia‘. There may be several reasons for sleeplessness – worry, stress, overtiredness, disease or excessive intake of tea or coffee.

A quiet mind, warmth, reading a good book or meditation can help us get a good nights sleep.
