1. Ali Baba had expected to find a narrow dark cave. Instead, he saw a large bright room. It was built by human hands, covered with marble, and decorated with high pillars. It received its light through openings in the ceiling. In this hall, everything you could wish was stored. Large rolls of cloth, valuable carpets, gold brocade, and magnificent clothes were lying in heaps.
2. Ali Baba, however, was especially attracted to the enormous quantity of gold. It was lying about in chunks and coins. Countless pearls and jewels sparkled in all colours of the rainbow. Like pebbles on the beach, they were lying on the ground. It seemed to him that the cave had been the thieves' store for centuries.
3. Ali Baba did not waste time. He gave no attention to the carpets and the jewels. Instead, he walked straight to the bags with the gold. Ali Baba was a poor man, and all the gold would help him lead a life of ease and plenty. Of these, he took as many from the cave as his donkey could carry. Each time he wanted to enter the cave or leave it, he called out "open sesame", and the door opened. When he had carried out enough, he collected his donkeys.
