Long Answer Type

Question 1. Derive the relation between (a) linear displacement and angular displacement (b) linear velocity and angular velocity
Answer:
Let a particle move on a circle of radius r with centre C. In time t it moves from P to Q along the arc, covering the arc length x and turning through the angle θ = ωt at the centre.
rQPCx
(a) By the definition of radian, angle = arc ÷ radius, so θ = x/r. Hence x = rθ .... (i)
(b) Divide (i) by the time t: x/t = r(θ/t).
x/t is the linear speed v and θ/t is the angular speed ω, so v = rω .... (ii)
(Dividing (ii) by t once more gives a = rα for the tangential acceleration.)
In simple words: The arc length equals radius times the angle, and the speed equals radius times the angular speed.

Teacher's Note:
1. Start from the radian definition θ = arc/radius.
2. Write the symbols for x, θ, v and ω clearly; the figure of the circle with arc PQ helps in an exam.
