Our government has taken many steps to protect our forests .Vanamahotsava programme is tree plantation programme and is organized in schools every year . Thousands of trees are planted during this programme.

b) Describe the climate of the Great Indian Desert.

The climate of the Great Indian desert is hot and dry throughout the year. There is very little or no rainfall . It is less than 25 cm per annum.In summer , the days are very hot but the nights are cool and pleasant. In winters ,the days are warm and the nights are very cold.

c) Write any four Fundamental Duties mentioned in the Constitution.

· All citizens must follow the ideals given in the constitution.

· We must respect the National Flag and National Anthem.

· We must help to keep our country united.

· We must help the government when the country is in danger.

· We must treat all citizens as equal.

· We must take care of the environment.

· We must take care of the public property.

d) What are the civic amenities ? Name the two levels at which the local self-government works.

Civic Amenities are the basic facilities such as water, electricity supply, schools, hospitals etc. provided by the local self-government. The two levels at which the local self- government works are rural (villages) and urban (towns and cities).

e) List any four functions of Gram Panchayat.

Four functions of Gram Panchayat are :

i) To provide drinking water.

ii) Settling disputes between villagers.

iii) To provide hygienic conditions in villages.

iv) To provide street lighting.

f) Mention any two Directive Principles written in the Constitution.

Directive Principles are :

i) People have proper living conditions.

ii) The interest of people belonging to Schedule Caste, Schedule tribes and other backward castes should be protected.

iii) Every child goes to school, the constitution advocates free and compulsory education for children up to 14 years of age.
