अष्टमः पाठः - अन्नाद् आनन्दं प्रति
संस्कृतवाङ्मये उपनिषत्-साहित्यस्य विशिष्टं महत्त्वपूर्णं च स्थानम् अस्ति। उपनिषत्सु अनेके ज्ञानप्रदाः संवादाः सन्ति। तैत्तिरीयोपनिषदि समग्रजीवनविकासाय पञ्चकोषाणां महत्त्वं पितापुत्रसंवादरूपेण वर्णितम्। तादृशज्ञानप्रदसंवादानाम् अध्ययनेन बोधनेन च वयम् आत्मविकासं कर्तुं शक्नुमः। अस्मिन् पाठे वयम् पितापुत्रयोः भृगुवरुणयोः संवादं पठिष्यामः।
(एकदा ब्रह्मज्ञानाय तत्परः वरुणस्य पुत्रः भृगुः सविनयं पितरं प्रति गत्वा निवेदयति)
भृगुः - अयि भोः पितः! अभिवादयेऽहं सादरम्। भगवन्! ब्रह्मविषये मयि काचिद् जिज्ञासा वर्तते। किं तद् ब्रह्म येन सर्वं जगदिदं सञ्चाल्यते? कृपया उपदिशतु।
वरुणः - पुत्र! शुभं भूयात्। ब्रह्मज्ञानाय त्वया स्वयमेव अन्वेषणं क्रियताम्। यत्नः अभ्यासश्च क्रियेताम्। तपस्तप्यताम्। तपसैव ज्ञायते।

a) यह संवाद 'तैत्तिरीयोपनिषद्' से है: पुत्र भृगु प्रश्न पूछते हैं और पिता वरुण उत्तर देते हैं।
b) मोटे अक्षरों वाले रूप देखिए: 'क्रियताम्' एकवचन है (अन्वेषणम्) और 'क्रियेताम्' द्विवचन है (यत्नः अभ्यासः च)।
c) 'अभिवादयेऽहम्' = अभिवादये + अहम् और 'तपसैव' = तपसा + एव।
भृगुः - अस्तु तात!
(ततो भृगुः अनेकवर्षाणि तप आचरति। तपस्तप्त्वा पुनः पितरं निकषा गच्छति। पिता तं पृच्छति - )
वरुणः - अयि पुत्र! त्वया किं ज्ञातम्?
भृगुः - भोः पितः! अन्नं वै ब्रह्म इति।
वरुणः - कथम् अन्नं ब्रह्मरूपेण ज्ञातम्?
भृगुः - हे पितः! अन्नाद् एव प्राणिनः जायन्ते। अन्नेन एव प्राणिनः जीवन्ति। अन्नेनैव शरीरं बलं च वर्धेते। अतोऽन्नं ब्रह्म इति। उच्यते हि -
आहारात् सर्वभूतानि सम्भवन्ति महीपते।
आहारेण विवर्धन्ते तेन जीवन्ति जन्तवः॥

वरुणः - पुत्र! त्वया सम्यग् अवबुद्धम्। अत उच्यते - अन्नं हि भूतानां ज्येष्ठम्। तस्मात् (अन्नं) सर्वौषधम् इति उच्यते। अतः कदापि अन्नं न निन्द्यात्। अन्नं सदा ईश्वरबुद्ध्या सेवताम्। कदापि अन्नं न परिहर्तव्यम्। प्रयत्नेन अन्नं बहु कुर्वीत। सर्वदा सात्त्विकं हितकारकं च आहारं सेवताम्। परं च हे वत्स! ब्रह्म ज्ञातुम् इतोऽपि यतताम्। तपः कुरुताम्।
भृगुः - अस्तु तात!
(पुनः भृगुः पर्वतं गत्वा बहूनि वर्षाणि तप आचरति। तपस्तप्त्वा पितुः समीपं गच्छति। आगतं पुत्रं दृष्ट्वा पिता पृच्छति)
वरुणः - हे पुत्र! तपसा त्वया किं ज्ञातम्?

शिक्षक की टिप्पणी
a) भृगु की पहली खोज 'अन्नं वै ब्रह्म' है; उसके तीन कारण भृगु स्वयं बताते हैं: अन्न से प्राणी जन्म लेते हैं, जीते हैं और उनका शरीर व बल बढ़ता है।
b) वरुण अन्न के बारे में जो नियम बताते हैं, उन्हें क्रम से याद रखिए: अन्न की निन्दा न करें, उसे ईश्वरबुद्धि से सेवन करें, उसे न त्यागें और प्रयत्न से बढ़ाएँ।
c) 'अतोऽन्नम्' = अतः + अन्नम् और 'इतोऽपि' = इतः + अपि।
