Notes on Tropical Monsoonal Climate

Characteristics of Indian Rainfall—

  • Orographic
  • Erratic and highly unpredictable
  • Unevenly distributed
  • Seasonal as they occur b/w June and September

Factors affecting climate—

HIMALAYAN RANGES— Protects India from the extremely cold winds originating near the ARCTIC CIRCLE & BLOWING OVER CENTRAL ASIA, checks MOISTURE-LADEN MONSOON WINDS & helps bringing plenty of rainfall

INFLUENCE OF WATER BODIES— Surrounding water bodies—Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal—provide moisture to the summer monsoons—heavy rainfall. Coastal regions enjoy almost same type of climate all year round as they receive the moderating influence of water bodies, while continental regions far away from WB experience cold dry winters & extremely hot summers.

IMPACT OF PREVAILING WINDS— MONSOONS are prevailing winds all over India—covers entire India during summer season & brings rainfall to almost every part

LATIDUNAL EXTENT— southern half of India lies in tropical belt close to the Equator & surrounded by WB. Northern half above TO Cancer lies in temperate belt—away from moderating influence of WB. India’s latitudinal extent—8 N to 37 N

ALTITUDE OF THE PLACE— for every 1000 m ascent, drop in temp of 6 degrees Celsius. Hill stations thus remain cold throughout the year—Srinagar, Mussoorie, Nainital.

UPPER AIR CIRCULATION— Western Disturbances are temperate cyclones which originate in Central Asia near the Mediterranean Sea and blow over Iran, Afghanistan, etc. to India via the Jet Streams bringing heavy rainfall in the winter season. PUNJAB, HARYANA, J&K

RELIEF FEATURES— Relief rainfall is caused when moisture-bearing winds strike a relief feature and shed their maximum moisture on the windward side of the mountain & lose it while blowing over to its leeward side. Eg: Mumbai and Pune (s/w monsoon winds) (Western Ghats)

Features—

REVERSAL OF WINDS— Winter—wind direction from n/e to s/w (land to sea), Summer—wind direction from s/w to n/e (sea to land)

DEVT OF HIGH & LOW PRESSURE AREAS— winter—cold—high pressure in northern part, summer—hot—low pressure. This alternation b/w high & low pressure control the direction, intensity & flow. Thus, winds are generally winter—offshore & dry, summer—onshore & wet.

SEASONAL & VARIABLE RAINFALL— most rainfall received during June to September. Might create floods & soil erosion

MULTIPLE SEASONS— 3 main seasons, but some regions observe 6—multiplicity & constant change of seasons

NATURAL CALAMITIES— variations in amt of rainfall received lead to climatic conditions like floods, droughts, famines & epidemics

AIR MASS THEORYs/e trade winds in SH & n/e trade winds in NH meet each other near the Equator at Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). This is the region of ascending air, max clouds & heavy rainfall.

JET STREAM THEORYband of fast moving air at height of 12 km, & speed variation of 200-400 km/hr.

HOT WEATHER SEASON— mid-March to June. High temp. Low humidity. Temp on west coast < east coast due to Westerly Winds. Low pressure trough from Thar Desert to Chotanagpur plateau. Hot dry winds—loo. Storm dusts. Violent storms in n/w—Norwesters/Kalbaisakhi/Bardoichila. Pre-monsoon showers/Mango showers in Kerala/KN/TN help in ripening of mangoes.  Pre-monsoon showers called Cherry blossoms help in cultivation of coffee berries.

COLD WEATHER SEASON— mid-November to mid-March. Clear skies, pleasant weather, low temp, low humidity, cool & slow northern winds. Temp decreases from south to north. N/E Trade Winds—land to sea. Western Disturbances—light rain in Northern plains & snowfall in the northern mountains—help in cultivation of rabi crops like wheat & mustard.

S/W MONSOON SEASON— June to mid-September. High heat, humidity, cloudy sky, spells of moderate to heavy rains & strong surface winds. Low pressure in northern plains attract trade winds of SH. 2 branches—Arabian Sea Branch & Bay of Bengal Branch. BB Branch gets deflected on reaching the Arakan Hills in Myanmar to India & Bangladesh, but get further deflected on reaching the foothills of the Himalayas and advances towards the Northern Plains. AS Branch winds are obstructed by the Western Ghats and thus the windward side Mumbai receives heavier rain than the leeward side Pune. Mawsynram (north of Cherrapunji—crest of Khasi Hills) receives highest average rainfall in the world. Eastern coastal belt (TN) remains dry. TN lies in the rain-shadow area of AS Branch & is || to BB Branch.

RETREATING MONSOONS— s/w monsoons begins retreating from n/w India from mid-Sep to Nov. Trough of low pressure becomes weaker to be replaced by high pressure which results in retreating monsoons. In the months of Oct & Nov, the ground is still moist due to the rains. This causes a lot of moisture in the air & the weather gets very hot & oppressive—OCTOBER HEAT.

Areas receiving High Rainfall: Kerala, MH, n/e states (Meghalaya)

Areas receiving Low Rainfall: Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, J & K

Areas receiving Very Low Rainfall: Rain-shadow regions in Deccan Plateau, north Kashmir, southern Punjab, western Rajasthan

Burst of Monsoons→ first spell of monsoons+thunder+lightning
