[Figure: Stacked trays with coconut laddoos and milk pedas arranged in a pattern, See in your textbook]
How many coconut laddoos are there in the trays? ____________
How many milk pedas are there in the trays? ____________
Note for Teachers
Encourage learners to count using different ways of grouping and share their thinking.
Teacher's Note
When things are arranged in equal rows, you do not need to count them one by one. Count how many are in one row, count the rows, and then add the rows together. Always check your answer by counting once more in a different way.
Patterns with Money
Shirley and Shiv arranged their play money in some nice patterns as shown below.
[Figure: Two arrangements of play coins and notes, See in your textbook]
How much money? ________ How much money? ________
How did you count them? Discuss in class.
Arrange play money of amounts 1, 2, 5, and 10 to show Rs. 36, Rs. 125, and Rs. 183. Ask your peers to tell how much it is.
Two Ways
Shirley and Shiv arranged their coins in the following ways. Write the number of coins in the triangles.
[Figure: Shirley's and Shiv's coin cards, with some numbers written in triangles (3, 5 and 4), See in your textbook]
Describe Shiv's arrangement and write his numbers.
__________________________________________________________
Describe Shirley's arrangement and write her numbers.
__________________________________________________________
Shiv has arranged his numbers in pairs. We call such numbers 'even numbers'.
Shirley's numbers are called 'odd numbers'.
Identify numbers between 1 and 20 as even or odd. You may draw the pairing arrangement of the numbers.
| Odd | Even |
|---|---|
| ______________ | ______________ |
| ______________ | ______________ |
| ______________ | ______________ |
Do you think all numbers in the times-2 table are even?
Note for Teachers
Encourage students to identify the pattern-number of objects that can be paired (even) and those that cannot be paired (odd).
Teacher's Note
To find out whether a number is even or odd, take that many coins or counters and put them in pairs. If every coin has a partner, the number is even. If one coin is left without a partner, the number is odd.
Key Points
- Objects arranged in equal rows or groups can be counted quickly by grouping, instead of counting them one by one.
- Arranging play money in patterns makes it easier to count an amount.
- Numbers that can be arranged in pairs are called even numbers; numbers that cannot be fully paired are called odd numbers.
