READING

FOR QUESTIONS 28 TO 34, READ THE PASSAGE AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW.

Dr. Seuss

A. Theodore Seuss Geisel was born in the USA in 1924. Most people know him by his pen name, Dr. Seuss. He wrote many children’s books during his lifetime. His children’s books have been translated into more than 20 languages. They have sold over 600 million copies worldwide. He also wrote magazine articles and books for older people. In addition, he illustrated many of his books himself. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1984 for his contributions to children’s education and entertainment.
B. Dr. Seuss published his first children’s book in 1937. It is called ‘And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street’. Later, he went on to write over 60 more children’s books. His last book was published in 1996. It is called ‘Oh, the Places You’ll Go!’. These days it is often given to students in America when they graduate high school. He also wrote 16 of the top 100 children’s books of all time. His top-ranking books were ‘Green Eggs and Ham’ and ‘Cat in the Hat’.
C. Many production companies wanted to make his books into films because they were so popular. But Dr. Seuss was very protective of his books. After some time though, he allowed them to be made into films. The first film was a cartoon version of his book, ‘Horton Hatches the Egg’. It was made in 1942. Among other books made into films were ‘The Cat in the Hat’, ‘Horton Hears a Who!’, and ‘The Lorax’.
D. Dr. Seuss was mostly looking to entertain children when he wrote his books. He also wanted to help them learn how to read though. That is one reason why he was so reluctant to make his books into films. However, he realised that the films would also help make children happy. Many people agree that helping children was his life’s achievement. Surprisingly, Dr. Seuss never had any children of his own. Although he passed away in 1991, he will never be forgotten by children around the world as the man who helped them learn to read.
