Particle Nature of Matter
1. Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space. It is made of very small particles with spaces between them. The particles attract each other and are always moving.
2. Evidence: dissolving sugar or salt in water does not increase the volume much, and a crystal of potassium permanganate colours a whole beaker of water. Each tiny crystal contains an enormous number of particles.
3. Diffusion is the intermixing of particles of two substances on their own. It is fastest in gases, slower in liquids and very slow in solids, and increases with temperature.
The Three States
| Property | Solid | Liquid | Gas |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shape | Fixed | Takes shape of the container | Takes shape of the container |
| Volume | Fixed | Fixed | Fills the container |
| Compressibility | Negligible | Small | High |
| Particle spacing and force | Closest, strongest force | Close, moderate force | Far apart, very weak force |
| Motion | Vibrate about fixed positions | Slide past each other | Move freely and randomly |
| Diffusion | Very slow | Moderate | Fast |
A fourth state, plasma, is a mixture of ions and electrons at very high temperature, as in stars and neon signs. The Bose-Einstein condensate forms at temperatures very close to absolute zero.
