The Cell
The cell is the structural and functional unit of life, and its shape and size suit its function. Both plant and animal cells have a plasma membrane, cytoplasm and a nucleus, and plant cells also have a cell wall.
| Part | Function |
|---|---|
| Plasma membrane | Lipoprotein layer that controls the movement of substances into and out of the cell |
| Cell wall (plants) | Gives mechanical strength and protection |
| Endoplasmic reticulum | Large surface for metabolism and protein synthesis; ribosomes attach to it |
| Golgi complex | Collects and packages materials; forms the acrosome of sperm |
| Mitochondria | Make energy-rich compounds, so called the power houses |
| Lysosomes | Digest worn-out material and dead cells, called suicide bags |
| Vacuoles | Support plant cells; contractile vacuoles in protozoa remove excess water |
| Plastids | Chloroplasts hold chlorophyll; leucoplasts store food |
| Centrosome | Pair of centrioles that helps in cell division (absent in plant cells) |
| Nucleus | Controls the cell; chromosomes carry hereditary information |
Plant and Animal Cells
Animal cells are generally smaller and lack a cell wall and plastids. During cytokinesis an animal cell membrane constricts to divide the cell, while a plant cell forms a cell plate in the middle.
