Percentages
Percent means per hundred: x% = x/100. To change a fraction or ratio into a percent multiply by 100 (5 : 4 = 5/4 = 125%). To find x% of a quantity multiply the quantity by x/100. To find what percent a is of b, compute (a/b) x 100. If x% of a number is known, the number = known value x 100/x.
Increase and Decrease
A quantity increased by p% becomes (1 + p/100) times the original; decreased by p% it becomes (1 - p/100) times. Successive changes multiply: +10% then -10% gives 1.1 x 0.9 = 0.99, a net decrease of 1%. 'A is p% more than B' uses B as the base.
Worked example: 15 boys earn Rs. 900 in 5 days; one boy earns 900/(15 x 5) = Rs. 12 a day, so 20 boys in 7 days earn 20 x 7 x 12 = Rs. 1680.
Useful Habits
Always decide the base (the 100%) first. Convert percent to fraction (25% = 1/4, 12.5% = 1/8, 33 1/3% = 1/3) to shorten calculations. Rebate, tax and commission are all percentages of a stated amount.
