Meaning of Percent
Percent means per hundred. A percentage is a ratio whose second term is 100, so 35% means 35 out of 100. The symbol % stands for the fraction 1/100.
| To convert | Rule | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Fraction to percent | Multiply by 100% | \( \frac{7}{20} \times 100 = 35\% \) |
| Decimal to percent | Multiply by 100% | 0.625 = 62.5% |
| Percent to fraction | Divide by 100 and reduce | 45% = 9/20 |
| Percent to decimal | Divide by 100 | 4.7% = 0.047 |
| Ratio to percent | Write as fraction, multiply by 100 | 3 : 5 = 60% |
Finding a Percentage of a Quantity
1. x% of N = (x/100) × N. So 25% of 20 = 5.
2. To find the whole when a part is known, work backwards: whole = part × 100 / x. If 8% of a man's income is saved and the saving is Rs. 220, the income is 220 × 100/8 = Rs. 2750.
3. To find what percent a is of b, use (a/b) × 100. 15 out of 50 is 30%.
4. The remaining part is found from the complement. If 15% of matches are drawn and 25% lost, then 100 - 40 = 60% are won.
Percentage Increase and Decrease
Percentage change is always measured against the original value.
1. Percent change = (change / original) × 100. A price moving from Rs. 3,50,000 to Rs. 3,70,000 rose by 20000/350000 × 100 = 5.71% .
2. After an increase of r%: new value = original × (100 + r)/100. After a decrease: new value = original × (100 - r)/100.
3. For repeated changes, apply each change to the value left after the previous one. A car losing 20% and then 15% is worth 0.80 × 0.85 = 0.68 of its price, not 0.65.
4. Taxes and service charges are percentage increases on the base price. Rs. 5000 plus 15% VAT costs 5000 × 1.15 = Rs. 5750.
