Questions

Section A: Reading

Q1.

Read the passage and answer the questions.

Fossils

Scientists who study the rocks, minerals, landforms and the history of the earth can tell what kinds of plants and animals lived on the earth a long time ago. These scientists are called geologists. One way they do this is by studying fossils. Fossils may be the actual remains of plants or animals, impressions of them in rock, or the tracks of animals as they walked or crawled. Most fossils are formed in the waters covering the continental shelves, in warm, shallow inland seas, and in large swamps. When animals of these waters die, their remains are deposited on the floor of the water body, where the fleshy parts decay. The skeletal portions of the body are partially replaced by minerals and other sediments. If this takes place in just the right manner, a fossil is formed. Since rock sediments are involved in the formation of fossils, many fossils are found in sedimentary rock layers. Plant fossils are found in areas that were once swamps. There are four principal kinds of fossils: original remains, replaced remains, moulds and casts, and impressions.

1. Geologists are ______. [1 mark]

View Answer & Explanation

Q2. 2. Fossils are formed ______. [1 mark]

View Answer & Explanation

Teacher's Note:

2. The process works only if conditions are 'just right'.

Q3. 3. Fossils are most often found in ______. [1 mark]
(a) sedimentary rocks
(b) metamorphic rocks
(c) igneous rocks
(d) none of these

View Answer & Explanation

Answer: (a) sedimentary rocks. Sediments are involved in fossil formation, so sedimentary layers hold most of them.

Teacher's Note:
1. Link the word 'sediments' in the passage to the rock type.
2. Igneous rocks form from molten material, which would destroy remains.

Q4. 4. The different kinds of fossils are ______. [1 mark]
(a) original remains
(b) replaced remains
(c) moulds and casts
(d) all of the above

View Answer & Explanation

Answer: (d) all of the above. The passage lists original remains, replaced remains, moulds and casts, and impressions.

Teacher's Note:

2. The definition is given in the middle of the passage.

Q6.

Read the poem and answer the questions.

Woodman, spare that tree!
Touch not a single bough!
In youth it sheltered me,
And I'll protect it now.
When but an idle boy
I sought its grateful shade;
In all their gushing joy
Here, too, my sisters played.
My mother kissed me here;
My father pressed my hand;
Forgive this foolish tear,
But let that old oak stand!
My heart-strings round thee cling,
Close as thy bark, old friend!

6. The poet wants the woodman to spare the tree because it ______. [1 mark]
(a) gave him shelter
(b) protects him
(c) both (a) and (b)
(d) none of these

Q7. 7. Which tree is mentioned in the poem? [1 mark]
