Questions

A1. Reading Passage: The Story of Tea

All big things materialize by accident. The same happened with the discovery of tea. Legend states that around 5000 years ago a Chinese emperor named Chen Nung was boiling water when leaves from a nearby shrub fell into the pot. He enjoyed the flavoured water so much that he decided to boil some more, and this is how tea, or "Cha", "tay" or "tu", was born.

The evergreen tea shrub is called Camellia sinensis. The Chinese first gathered it from the wild and later started growing it around AD 350. Tea remained prevalent in China for many years before it reached the outside world. It is believed that tea travelled from China to Turkey, Portugal, Europe and finally America.

Tea became popular in Europe in the 17th century for its stimulating and medicinal properties. It was sold for the first time in London in 1657. By 1662 it had become a favourite drink of the elite, and this is how the famous "English Tea Parties" began.

Tea is broadly divided into four types: White, Green, Oolong and Black. All come from the raw leaves of the same plant; the difference lies in the processing. Tea is mainly produced in China and Japan (green tea), Taiwan (oolong tea), and India and Sri Lanka (black tea). Nowadays more people drink tea than coffee. Some boil it with water and milk, others in plain water; in summer some enjoy iced tea with lemon, and in winter they like it piping hot.

Tea is also believed to have health benefits. It is said to help the body fight cancer, lower bad cholesterol and boost immunity. It is a great anti-oxidant and helps balance body fluids.
