Question 1. The given table records the number of employees working in Golden Automobiles in various departments from 2015 to 2019. Give an analytical description of the table in your own words. Also give necessary comparisons and contrasts wherever possible.
YearsDepartments and Number of Employees
ProductionSalesCorporateAccounts
20151500250500450
20162250400450620
20174500650300900
201850008003501230
201950507503601300

Answer:
The table given above illustrates the number of employees working in Golden Automobiles in various departments in a time period of five years, from 2015 to 2019. The study also provides adequate data to compare how the numbers increased or decreased in the Production, Sales, Corporate and Accounts departments.
The overall trend reveals that the number of employees in Sales and Accounts was directly proportional to production. Only the Corporate department is the exception. Here, the number of employees rose and fell independently irrespective of figures shown by the production department. In 2015, the production department began with a modest number of 1500 employees. The lowest number of employees corresponded with Sales and Accounts departments which also recorded the lowest number of employees, 250 and 450 respectively. However, the Corporate department peaked at 500 employees in 2015 when all others touched the bottom. The maximum number of employees in Production and Accounts was recorded in 2019, 5050 and 1300 respectively, while Sales peaked at 800 in 2018. The lowest number of employees in the Corporate department was 300 in 2017. It can be safely concluded that except the Corporate department, the number of employees in Golden Automobiles depended on production. Only more production demands more employees in the production or manufacturing department. The corporate department acted quite independently irrespective of what happened in other departments.

Writing Tips:
1. Do not copy every cell; pick out the highest, the lowest and the most striking comparisons.
2. Read row and column headings carefully so that every figure is attached to the right item.

Question 2. The given news report illustrates the average salary hikes of India Inc. to its employees for 2020. Summarise by writing an analytic paragraph (150-200 words) highlighting the main features and details. Compare wherever relevant.
India Inc to give average hike of 9%: Survey
Lower than last year, but 39% companies to see double-digit rise
SectorEarlier hike (%)Projected hike for 2020 (%)
Leaders
E-commerce-10
Professional Services-10
Pharma/Medical Devices-9.9
Hi-Tech/IT-9.6
ITes-9.5
Laggards
Transportation/Logistics8.17.6
Hospitality/Restaurants8.98.2
Real Estate/Infra8.88.3
Automotive/Vehicle Mfg10.18.3
Telecom98.5

Answer:
The news report illustrates that India Inc. will offer an average salary hike to its employees which is just a shade less than last year. Despite economic challenges and the threats of a slowdown, organisations and companies in India are taking a positive view. Companies in India gave an average increase of 9.3 percent during 2019. As the overall trend reflects, the hardest hit is automotive manufacturing which reported the biggest drop, from 10.1% in 2018 to 8.3% in 2020. The other sectors that will see the lowest pay hikes are Transportation/Logistics, Hospitality/Restaurants, Real Estate/Infra and Telecom. In Logistics, the fall in hike will be from 8.1 to 7.6 percent. In the Hospitality sector this fall is from 8.9 to 8.2 percent. In Real Estate/Infra, the trend continues, from 8.8 to 8.3 percent. Even employers in the Telecom sector will be doling out a lower pay hike, from 9 percent in 2018 to 8.5 percent in 2020. According to the survey, the employees in E-commerce, Professional services, Pharma, Hi-Tech/IT and ITes will receive generous hikes in their salaries. The employees in E-commerce and professional services will have the maximum hikes in their salaries, the average rise being 10 percent. The worst sufferers will be the employees of Transport/Logistics who will have to console themselves with a meagre hike of 7.6 percent in their salaries.

Writing Tips:
1. Use the headline to write the opening sentence: it gives the main finding of the report.
2. Contrast the 'leaders' with the 'laggards' and name the biggest drop (Automotive, 10.1% to 8.3%).

Question 3. Below is a graph showing birth and death rates in a country from 1901 to 2101. Write an analytical paragraph (100-150 words).
Birth and Death Rates, 1901-2101 0 10 20 30 40 50 60 70 80 Births and deaths (thousands) 1901 1921 1941 1961 1981 2001 2021 2041 2061 2081 2101 Births Deaths
Answer:
The graph shows birth and death rates starting from 1901 till 2101.
Since 1901, the birth rate has remained more than the death rate until 2041. Birth rate was about 20000 in 1901 and started increasing gradually. It peaked in the 1970s at around 70000. After that, the birth rate fluctuated between about 55000 and 70000. It is expected to decline in the coming years, reaching approximately 46000 by 2101.
On the other hand, the death rate stood at under 10000 in 1901 and then increased steadily. It is expected to rise strikingly from 2021 before levelling off at approximately 60000 between 2061 and 2081. The graph indicates a slight decline in deaths in the year 2101.
The graph shows the huge gap between birth rate and death rate during 1961 to 2001. However, this gap is expected to reduce in the later years. Overall, as opposed to the prevailing trends, the death rate will be more than the birth rate in the later half of the 21st century.

Writing Tips:
1. Point out the year when the two lines cross (around 2041); it is the key feature of this graph.
2. Use approximate values ('around 70000') when the graph does not label exact points.

Question 4. The chart given below shows the division of household tasks by gender in Great Britain. Write an analytical paragraph describing the chart given in not more than 200 words.
Division of Household Tasks by Gender in Great Britain 0 10 20 30 40 50 60 70 80 Minutes per person per day 30 74 Cooking, baking, washing up 13 58 Cleaning, tidying 49.5 21 Gardening, petcare 20 45 Care of children 26 9.5 Maintenance, odd jobs 2 25 Clothes washing, ironing Males Females
Answer:
The chart shows the number of minutes per day spent by British men and women in doing household tasks. On an average, the women spend about four hours doing household tasks whereas the men spend less than two and a half hours. The tasks on which women spend more time than men include cooking, cleaning the house, taking care of the children and laundry. In doing all these tasks, women spend approximately 200 minutes which is almost three times the time spent by men in these tasks. On the other hand, men spend twice the time women do in doing tasks like gardening and maintenance or odd jobs in the house. Men spend the highest time, almost 50 minutes, in gardening and petcare, while the women spend only 21 minutes on these tasks. The time spent by men in washing, ironing and sewing clothes is as low as 2 minutes per day as opposed to 25 minutes spent by women. In short, women spend far more time doing household chores than men whilst men prefer to do gardening, petcare and maintaining odd jobs.

Writing Tips:
1. Group the tasks into those done more by women and those done more by men.
2. Totals (about 232 minutes for women, 140 for men) give a strong opening comparison.

Question 5. The pie chart given below shows the proportion of people from different households living in poverty in the UK in 2002. Write an analytical paragraph to describe the information in 100-120 words.
People Living in Poverty by Household Type, UK 2002 26% 24% 15% 14% 9% 7% 5% Sole parents (26%) Single without children (24%) Couple with children (15%) All households (14%) Couple without children (9%) Single aged persons (7%) Aged couple (5%)
Answer:
The given pie chart illustrates seven different categories of households living in poverty in the UK in 2002.
It is clearly evident from the pie chart that 26% of the total poverty-stricken households are those of sole parents. Single people without children account for the second highest proportion with 24%. In contrast to couples without children that account for just 9%, couples with children account for 15% of the poor households. Single aged persons and aged couples together account for 12% of poor households.
Overall, 14% of all households in the UK were living under poverty. The younger generation had a greater poor percentage than their aged counterparts. Couples without children had better economic conditions than those with children.

Writing Tips:
1. Open with the largest groups (sole parents, singles) and close with the smallest (aged couples).
2. Treat the 'All households' figure (14%) as the national average and compare groups against it.
