Answer:
Introduction: The line graph given above presents the gradual fall in the number of COVID-19 cases from September 17 to September 27. It also shows that the seven-day average of daily tests conducted amounted to 11.2 lakhs and the test positive rate was 7.7 percent.
Overall View: It is heartening that in the time period mentioned above COVID-19 cases started showing a steady fall, from 93,199 cases of infection on the 17th to 85,131 cases on the 27th of September 2020. Daily tests averaged at 11.2 lakhs and the positive rate is 7.7 percent, not very alarming but definitely giving no cause for rejoicing.
Description of Details:
(i) The government still claims that COVID-19 has not entered the 'community transmission' phase in India. Nor has it peaked so far. However, the pattern of the infection has raised a little ray of hope. There has been a steady fall in the number of cases from September 17. On 17th of September the number of new infections was 93,199. They dropped by more than 3000 on the next day (90,044). September 19 saw a further drop and recorded 89,426 new cases of infection. On 21st, the numbers again swelled to 93,000. But then started a steady fall from 22nd of September. From 24th September to 26th September, the new cases fell from 87,752 to 86,270 and then to 86,000, and finally to 85,131, the lowest, on September 27, 2020.
(ii) The need for increasing daily tests has been, at last, recognised and implemented. The 7-day average of daily tests stands at 11.2 lakhs which sounds rather encouraging. The test positivity rate stands at 7.7 percent which is definitely on the higher side.
Conclusion: When the daily COVID-19 infection cases were touching nearly a lakh, the steady, though marginal, fall in the number of cases is a major relief to the people. The 7-day average of daily tests standing at 11.2 lakhs needs to be enhanced further as the test positive rate is still fairly high at 7.7 percent.
Writing Tips:
1. Note the y-axis starts at 80,000, so the fall looks steeper than it is; describe it as steady but marginal.
2. Use the extra data (daily tests, positivity rate) in a separate sentence or paragraph.
Answer:
The graph given above illustrates the threatening number of Corona Virus related death cases in the United States of America from April 1 to May 2, 2020. The number of deaths even surpassed the shocking number of American soldiers lost in the Vietnam War. The overall trend shows a constant upward trend. Within a short span of 30 days, more than 65,000 precious lives were lost being smitten by COVID-19. The staggering numbers appear more terrible when contrasted with the deaths of American soldiers in the Vietnam War. More American lives have already been lost than the number of soldiers killed (58000+) in Vietnam. And there is no respite as yet. On April 1, there were just 800 deaths. The figures showed a steady climb during the first ten days. On April 10, there were 5000 COVID-19 related deaths in the USA. The number rose to 15000 by April 15 and shot up to 30000 within the next five days, from April 15 to April 20. The numbers doubled from what they were on April 15. From April 20 to April 25, the time-period showed the maximum increase in the number of deaths, 20000. They rocketed to 50000 on April 25. The same story continued till May 2, when the recorded number of COVID-19 related deaths rose to more than 68000.
Overall, the number of deaths caused by COVID-19 demonstrated a geometric progression. Due to unseen reasons the spread couldn't be controlled in the initial stages. On April 1, the number was just 800. With the passage of time COVID-19 became more uncontrollable and fatal.
Writing Tips:
1. Work out the increase in each interval to find where the rise was steepest (20,000 between April 20 and 25).
2. Use the comparison given in the chart (Vietnam war deaths) to show the scale of the figures.
| Cities | Kanpur | Mumbai | Kolkata | Delhi | Lucknow |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kanpur | - | 22 | 15 | 13 | 7 |
| Mumbai | 22 | - | 25 | 28 | 20 |
| Kolkata | 15 | 25 | - | 18 | 15 |
| Delhi | 13 | 28 | 28 | - | 15 |
| Lucknow | 7 | 15 | 15 | 15 | - |
Answer:
The table above lists the postal charges for sending parcels to the five major cities of India. It also offers a comparative study in this regard.
The general trend indicates that it is the distance that decides the rates of sending parcels to various cities of India. The charges from Delhi to Mumbai or from Mumbai to Delhi are the highest. So is the distance as compared to other cities. The rates from Kanpur to Kolkata and vice-versa are fixed at Rs. 15.
Lucknow because of its strategic location provides the advantage of having the least charges to other cities. The average fare from Lucknow to all other cities comes to rupees 13 only. Postal rates from Mumbai to other cities are the highest, the average being Rs. 23.75. The lowest postal charges are from Kanpur to Lucknow or from Lucknow to Kanpur. They are only Rs. 7. The second lowest rates are from Delhi to Kanpur and vice-versa. They are Rs. 13 only.
Overall, the distance determines the postal charges for sending parcels from one city to the other. The high charges are naturally from Mumbai to Delhi and vice-versa and the lowest from Kanpur to Lucknow and back.
Writing Tips:
1. In a two-way table, read the row as 'from' and the column as 'to'.
2. Averages (Lucknow Rs. 13, Mumbai Rs. 23.75) are a quick way to compare whole rows.
| Language | Number of people learning the language | Number of native speakers | Number of countries where language is spoken |
|---|---|---|---|
| English | 1.5 billion | 527 million | 101 |
| French | 82 million | 118 million | 51 |
| Chinese | 230 million | 1.39 billion | 33 |
| Spanish | 14.5 million | 389 million | 31 |
| Italian | 8 million | 67 million | 29 |
| Japanese | 3 million | 123 million | 25 |
| Hindi | 120 million | 637.9 million | 23 |
Answer:
The given table illustrates some revealing facts about seven most popular languages in the world. The table allows comparison between the number of people who study a language versus those who speak it as a mother tongue. It also shows in how many countries each language is spoken.
The dominance of English is quite evident. 1.5 billion people are learning English all over the world. Chinese and Hindi, here, hold poor second and third positions. 230 million and 120 million are the number of people learning Chinese and Hindi respectively. French is the fourth popular language that is being learnt by 82 million people.
Chinese and Hindi dominate so far as the number of native speakers is concerned. About 1.39 billion native speakers speak Chinese while Hindi has about 640 million native speakers. English is a poor third at 527 million and Spanish holds the fourth position with 389 million. Japanese (123 million) and French (118 million) come next, and Italian, with 67 million native speakers, is at the lowest leg of the ladder.
English shows its prominence as a true global language. It is spoken and studied in more than a hundred countries. French and Chinese follow English with their presence in 51 and 33 countries respectively. Spanish, Italian, Japanese and Hindi are spoken in 31, 29, 25 and 23 countries respectively. Overall, more people are learning English than all the other languages combined together. However, Chinese is getting popularity among the learners. Hindi is being studied more than Spanish, Italian and Japanese combined together. English seems to be unbeatable as it is studied and learnt in 101 countries.
Writing Tips:
1. Write one paragraph for each column of the table: learners, native speakers and number of countries.
2. Check rankings carefully; for native speakers the order is Chinese, Hindi, English, Spanish, Japanese, French, Italian.
| States | Confirmed | Recovered | Deaths |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maharashtra | 10,498 | 1,773 | 459 |
| Gujarat | 4,395 | 613 | 214 |
| Delhi | 3,515 | 1,094 | 59 |
| Madhya Pradesh | 2,660 | 482 | 137 |
| Rajasthan | 2,584 | 836 | 58 |
| Tamil Nadu | 2,323 | 1,258 | 27 |
| Andhra Pradesh | 1,403 | 321 | 31 |
| Uttar Pradesh | 2,203 | 1,258 | 27 |
| Telangana | 1,038 | 397 | 26 |
| West Bengal | 795 | 139 | 33 |
Answer:
The given table lists the number of COVID-19 related deaths in various states of India as on May 1, 2020. The table also accounts for the number of confirmed cases and the number of people who recovered, coming out from the jaws of the deadly Corona Virus.
The overall picture may not appear as shocking as that of the USA and Europe. The Western state of Maharashtra reported the highest number of COVID-19 cases as of May 1, 2020, with 10,498 cases. Gujarat and the capital city Delhi trailed behind with 4,395 and 3,515 confirmed cases respectively. Interestingly, while Maharashtra and Gujarat lead in the number of deaths, Madhya Pradesh overtakes Delhi in the number of deaths at 137, compared to Delhi's modest figure of 59. West Bengal shows the least number of confirmed cases (795), while Telangana comes at the bottom in the number of deaths with just 26. Interestingly and mercifully, the most populous state of India, Uttar Pradesh, recorded just 27 deaths, only one more than Telangana. In India, at least, the impact of Corona was quite subdued as compared to the USA and Europe. Maharashtra also topped the number of 'recovered persons' with 1,773. Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Delhi have a satisfactory number of 'recovered cases' at 1,258, 1,258 and 1,094 respectively. Overall, the situation in India due to COVID-19 is definitely a cause of concern but in no way a cause for panic. With continued 'Lockdowns', it is hoped that India would come out victorious in its fight against COVID-19.
Writing Tips:
1. Look down each column separately to find its highest and lowest; the state with the fewest cases need not have the fewest deaths.
2. Compare states that break the pattern (Madhya Pradesh has fewer cases than Delhi but more deaths).
