It was getting dark and he knew that there would be few animals at that time, as most return home by dusk. Suddenly he saw a cave in a hill nearby. ‘This is a bit of luck,’ he thought.’ I shall go into the cave and hide myself. Some animal is sure to come there to sleep at night. I can then eat a good dinner without making an effort to catch it first.’ So he went into the cave and waited. The cave was the home of the jackal. He slept there every night. As it grew dark the jackal returned from his day’s activities to the cave. ‘Hello-o-o-.’he called. There was silence.’ Strange,’ said the jackal loudly. ‘What’s the matter with you, Cave? You always reply to my greetings. If you’re going to be unfriendly tonight, I shall go to another cave.’
