D. Answer the Following Questions:-
Question. What is the composition of Air?
Answer. Air is a mixture of gases. It contains about 78% Nitrogen, 21% Oxygen and 1% other gases like Carbon dioxide and Hydrogen. Oxygen is the most important gas as all living things require Oxygen to live. Carbon dioxide is needed by the plants for photosynthesis.
Question. What are the uses of Air Pressure?
Answer. Uses of Air Pressure are as follows:
i. To draw ink into fountain pen.
ii. To draw water using water/hand pump.
iii. To rotate windmills for grinding.
iv. To make hot air balloons
v. To suck the juice through straw.
Question. What makes water impure? What are its harmful effects
Answer. When water contains impurities that are harmful for humans, animals, plants and even for the environment then it is said to be impure.
Causes:
1. Allowing sewage from homes and waste material from factories dump into waterbodies.
2. Washing off chemical fertilizers and pesticides from the fields into the water bodies.
Harmful Effects of Impure Water:
1. Spread of waterborne diseases like Diarrhoea, Dysentery, etc.
2. Death of aquatic animals
3. Destruction of Ecosystem
4. Disruption of Food Chain
.
Question. Describe the different ways by which insoluble impurities can be removed from water.
Answer. The different ways by which insoluble impurities can be removed from water are the following:
1. Filtration 2. Sedimentation and Decantation A. Filtration: In this process insoluble impurities are removed from water by passing the impure water through a filter paper. A circular piece of filter paper is taken and folded twice to make a cone and this is kept inside a funnel. A flask is kept below the funnel and the mixture is poured into the flask through the funnel. Sand is retained on the filter paper and clean water is obtained in the flask.
B. Sedimentation and Decantation:
1. The mixture of insoluble impurities for example, (mud) and water is allowed to stand undisturbed in a beaker.
2. After some time the mud settles down at the bottom of the container as sediments. This process is called sedimentation.
3. Clean water can then be poured out into a separate container without disturbing the sediments. This process is called decantation.
Question. Describe the different ways by which soluble impurities can be removed from water.
Answer: The different ways by which soluble impurities can be removed from water are:
A. Evaporation: In this process a solution containing soluble impurities like common salt or sugar is heated. After some time, water will change into steam and the soluble impurity will be left behind in the container.
B. Distillation: This process involves the following steps: (i) Impure water is taken in a round bottomed flask and heated. (ii) On heating, water changes into steam and the impurities are left behind. When the steam through the condenser, it cools and turns into water (liquid). (iii)Pure water is collected in a flask.
Question. What is Acid Rain? What are its Harmful Effects?
Answer. Pollutants Acidic gases like NO2, SO2 when they reach the sky, mix up and form acids and come down as rain, called as Acid rain.
Harmful effects of Acid Rain:
i. It causes direct damage to leaves of plants.
ii. It causes damage to fresh water life with decreases the fish population in lakes.
iii. It damages buildings and historical monuments.
iv. It removes basic nutrients such as calcium from the soil
