Shifting From Place To Place
People have many reasons why they might want to move from one place to another. Some families leave their home or native place and move permanently to a new place due to the problems faced by them like poor educational facilities,
war, worse climatic conditions, lesser employment opportunities, etc. Some movements take place because of marriages, pursuing higher education abroad and transfers in Central Government job.
The movement of a person or a group of people to settle in another place is called Migration. It can be temporary or permanent. Emigration means to leave one’s country to live in another and the people who emigrate are called emigrants.
Immigration means to come into another country to live permanently and the people who immigrate are called immigrants. For example, if a person lives in India and moves to the United States to live permanently, then he is an emigrant
from India and immigrant to United States. The same person is an emigrant when he leaves his own country or region and an immigrant when he arrives somewhere else.
Sometimes, during construction of bridges, dams and highways, land is taken away from people. They are then given land somewhere else. This is called Displacement. Sometimes, the government demolishes or destructs houses and
buildings built on unauthorised land. This is called Demolition. The people living in such places have to move to a new place.
