Ans: For Andrew marriage was a peaceful and beautiful state. He loved Christine. The conflict between his steady mind and overflowing heart left him resentful and confused.
 
Q2) ‘Don’t fret, mother, I’ll not run away.” Who uttered these words and why? 
Ans: These words are uttered by Andrew. Susan’s mother was afraid that he might leave the case. Andrew assured her that he wouldn’t run away. He would remain there until everything was over.
 
Q3) Why did Andrew feel surprised white sitting by kitchen fire? 
Ans: Andrew had been thinking about his beloved as he sat by the kitchen fire. He sat still and sadly for a long time. When the old woman sitting opposite him suddenly addressed him, Andrew felt surprised.
 
Q4) What was Andrew’s opinion regarding marriage? 
Ans: Andrew’s thought were heavy and muddled. He thought of the unhappy marriages of Bramwell, of Edward Page and of Denny. But Andrew wished to consider marriage as an idyllic state with his beloved Christine.
