Teacher's Note
When counting days between two dates, remember that leap years occur every four years and have 29 days in February instead of 28. To find someone's age, count from their birth year to the current year, being careful about whether their birthday has passed this year. Practice this with a few examples to get comfortable with the pattern.
Let Us Explore

Note for Teacher
Help children understand the difference between AM and PM and how it eases communication about time among people. You may seek children's routine experiences and associate them with AM and PM. You may draw their attention to the 24-hour clock and how it shows time and make children practice reading and writing it.
In both the pictures we see 8:00 on the clock. But one is morning and the other is night time. We add AM and PM to show this difference.
[Figure: Two clocks showing 8:00 AM (morning scene with girl eating) and 8:00 PM (evening scene with girl cooking), See in your textbook]
Digital clocks help us read the time more clearly.
[Figure: Two digital clocks showing 08:00 (for 8:00 AM) and 20:00 (for 8:00 PM), See in your textbook]
Read the following table and see how we read and write time using AM/PM and the digital clock. Discuss what you notice about the two different ways.
| 8:00 AM | 8:00 PM |
|---|---|
| 08:00 | 20:00 |
Key Points
- A leap year occurs every four years and has 29 days in February instead of 28, giving it 366 days instead of the usual 365 days.
- AM stands for morning times (from midnight to noon) and PM stands for afternoon and evening times (from noon to midnight). The same time like 8:00 can be either AM or PM depending on whether it is morning or night.
- A digital clock uses 24-hour format where times after noon are shown as 13:00, 14:00, and so on, making it clear whether the time is morning or evening without needing AM or PM.
- There are 24 hours in a complete day and night cycle, which you can count by tracking all the activities from 6:00 AM one day until 6:00 AM the next day.
